Oil Painting - Paint a Classic Pear - Taster

Ever wanted to try oil painting but weren’t sure where to start? This relaxed, hands-on taster session is the perfect introduction. We will paint a simple, classic pear—because what says oil painting more than that! We will be drawing inspiration from the work of Craig Stephens as shown below. You will be guided step by step through the basics, from sketching your shape to layering beautiful, rich colour. No experience needed—just come along and enjoy the process.

Course Outline:

In this beginner-friendly session, you will be introduced to the fundamentals of oil painting in a fun and approachable way. We will start by loosely mapping out the shape of a pear, learning how to simplify what we see into basic forms. From there, you will be guided through mixing and applying base colours, and gradually building depth, light and shadow using traditional oil painting techniques. Along the way, learn how to handle the paint, use your brushes with confidence, and embrace a more relaxed, painterly approach.

Learning Outcome:

By the end of this session, students will:

  • Gain a basic understanding of how to use oil paints and materials
  • Learn how to map out a simple subject using shape and tone
  • Build confidence in mixing and applying colour
  • Create a finished small oil painting of a pear
  • Feel inspired to continue exploring oil painting
