Argentinian Tango - Beginners

The Beginners Tango Course allow students to be introduced and experience first-hand fundamental concepts of dancing the Argentinian tango, its musical variety and social culture. Main topics deal within this course are posture and frame, walking, weight changes and body balance, parallel vs cross walk systems, turns and pivots, embrace and connection and leading and follower roles. These topics are progressively unfolded through the course using a combination of technique drills and a series of basic tango moves.

The course set a great emphasis in helping students to develop their individual technique to become together as better leaders and followers. Moreover, during the course students will also learn about tango history, music, and its different styles as well as tango dancing etiquette culture. Towards the end of the course students will be given the opportunity to be introduced into Sydney’s tango scene, attending as a group a tango dance party (i.e. milonga). This is the main goal of the course, thus is students taken their first steps in a social context and dancing Argentinian tango.

Course Outline:

Technique topics as they are taught in conjunction with general moves (below): posture, weight changes, balance, walking, turns, pivots, embrace and connection, leader, and followers' roles.

Level 1: Walking in Parallel System

General Moves

  • Rock-step
  • Walking in the parallel system
  • Left turn check step
  • Forward Ocho
  • Box-6 steps
  • Basic parallel cross output

Level 2: Walking in the Cross System

General Moves

  • Back ochos double time exit
  • Back ochos exit cross
  • Linking the parallel and cross system

Learning Outcomes:

  • Leaders: learning the basic technique of connecting with their partners; thus, to learn the know-how to control their body posture and balance, transferring their weight with their partners and convey clear and definite body leads.
  • Followers: learning the basic technique of connecting with their partners; thus, to learn the know-how of controlling their body posture and balance while at the same time does not anticipate their leaders; learning to move only through the energy convey by the embrace and weight changes prompted by the leader.

About the Tutor:

'Pablo Lara and his partner Graciela Piola were born in the Rio de la Plata (Pablo in Montevideo – Uruguay and Graciela in Buenos Aires – Argentina) cradle of tango.
Pablo has more than 20 years of dancing and teaching experience in Australia and overseas. Graciela is a natural born dancer that has been called into her tango journey since 2016.
In 2013, he brought his enthusiasm and passion for tango to The Shire opening the first ever tango school in the Sutherland region. In 2019, they opened their first regular tango venue at Wollongong. In 2022, their school was nominated among the Finalists of the prestigious Local Business Award for the Sutherland Shire under the Performing Arts category.''
