AI Explorers - Years 5 & 6 - New!

This course introduces students to the exciting world of Artificial Intelligence (AI) through creative, hands-on activities designed to build curiosity, confidence, and digital awareness. Students learn what AI is, how it works in everyday life, and how to use it safely and responsibly. They explore fun challenges such as the “AI or Human?” game, creative story-making with AI tools, and simple fact-checking tasks that encourage critical thinking and imagination.

The course focuses on helping younger learners become confident digital citizens who understand that AI is a tool for learning and creativity — not a replacement for human thinking.

The curriculum is directly related to and complements:

  • NSW Primary English and Digital Technologies outcomes
  • Critical and Creative Thinking in Bloom’s Taxonomy
  • Safe online behaviour and ethical use of technology
  • Creative writing and problem-solving skills development

This course covers the following:

Understanding AI

  • What AI is and how we use it every day (voice assistants, search engines, games)
  • Exploring examples of AI in art, language, and music

Safe and Responsible Use

  • Learning online safety rules for using AI tools
  • Understanding the difference between real and fake information
  • Respecting privacy and ethical digital behaviour

Creativity and Storytelling with AI

  • Playing “AI or Human?” games to spot the difference
  • Using simple AI tools to brainstorm ideas or characters for stories
  • Writing short stories or poems with AI-assisted creativity

Fact-Checking and Critical Thinking

  • Comparing AI answers to real sources
  • Deciding what information can be trusted
  • Discussing how to think independently while using technology

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this course, students will:

  • Understand the basic concept and purpose of Artificial Intelligence
  • Use AI safely and responsibly for creative learning tasks
  • Develop early critical thinking and digital literacy skills
  • Express ideas creatively through storytelling and interactive games
  • Demonstrate awareness of how to verify facts and make safe digital choices
  • How to best navigate and use NSWEduChat

Entry Requirements:

Students currently in Years 5–6 who are curious about technology and creativity and wish to learn how AI can help them explore ideas safely and ethically.
