This workshop is designed for anyone who wishes to explore the techniques of Botanical watercolour painting, with a focus on fine details using hot press paper. We will explore some techniques, such as wet-on-wet, glazing, layering, lifting, dry brush, edge control, and colour mixing.
In order to save time on drawing and focus on painting, you will be able to use a light pad to copy the design. You will then be guided clearly from start to finish. Some techniques may feel challenging at first glance, but this course is meant to be a calm and mindful experience, and will lead you to more practical knowledge, inspiration and ideas to be able to follow your own journey.
Course Outline:
- This course is structured to guide you step-by-step through the core techniques of watercolour painting, with a focus on controlled details
- I will do a demonstration of different brushes, pigments and material
- You will focus on the specific watercolour technique for this class: layering, transparency, contrast, glazing, lifting, etc..
- You will learn how to apply and control paint on hot press paper
- You will discover how to mix colours effectively for the fig and then for the fig leaf
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this workshop, you will learn:
- How to use the right pigments
- How to mix your own colours
- Play with transparency, and how to control water and pigment to create soft transitions, depth, and luminosity in your work
- Cross hatching in watercolour for very fine details
What to bring:
Watercolour paper Arches , 100% cotton , 300 gsm, Hot press. Size A3 or A4.
- 1 pad of cheap watercolour paper like Reno Art
- Pencil 2H Faber Castle, or Stadler
- Eraser Staedler or Faber Castle
- Tea towels or paper towels to clean brush
- A corflute board
- An old fabric to protect the tables
- 2 Water containers to wash brushes
- Low adhesiveness masking tape, preferably white
- Watercolour palette or a large plate/ serving plate
- masking fluid
Watercolour list: permanent green Schmincke (or Permanent green nbr1 Holbein), Alizarin Crimson, Lamp Black, Ultramarine, Mountain blue Schminkce (or Cerulean Blue Holbein ), Opera-rose, violet (Dioxazine)

About the Tutor:
'iffanie Vidal is as much passionate about painting, than teaching and sharing her French “savoir faire”. She began her artistic journey with private tutoring with the teacher of the Art Schools “Beaux Arts”, then followed various classes in South of France and Australia, and le Carousel du Louvre in Paris. Shen then studied Interior Design Diploma at CATC School in the Rocks, Sydney.
Having spent over 30 years living overseas, Tiffanie Vidal was immersed in a wide range of artistic cultures and traditions. She took the opportunity to visit museums and heritage houses to widen her knowledge. She found that the more she sees, the most she can find inspiration and creativity.
Over time, she chose to specialise in watercolour painting, drawn to its fluidity, transparency, and the way pigments interact with paper. For Tiffanie, watercolour is also a meditative experience, a balance between focus, calm and creativity.
Tiffanie has been featured on French SBS radio, where she spoke about art and the importance of transmitting skills and knowledge across generations. She presents her work every Saturday at Paddington Markets, and participates in various events.

- To ensure resources are ready for you at the start of your course, we ask you ideally enrol at least one week before the course commences.
- All courses need a minimum number of students to run ("we try our hardest to get those") . If your course does not have enough students it will be cancelled before the commencement and you will be informed.
