Guided by artist and educator Arafat Hosen—whose practice blends traditional techniques with mindful exploration—you will develop confidence in using watercolours as a tool for observation and creative expression. Whether you’re looking to start your watercolour journey or deepen your existing skills, this workshop offers a supportive space to experiment, learn, and enjoy the meditative process of painting. No prior experience is necessary. Just bring your curiosity and a willingness to explore the unpredictable magic of watercolour.

What to bring:

Paper & Surfaces:

  • Watercolour paper (300gsm, cold-pressed, A4 or A3 size)
  • Drawing board or clipboard for support
  • Masking tape or clips

Paints:

  • Watercolour paint set (pan or tube, minimum 12 colors)
  • Recommended colors: Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Sienna, Yellow Ochre, Alizarin Crimson, Sap Green, Payne’s Grey

Brushes:

  • Round brushes (sizes 4, 8, 10)
  • Flat brush (1" or ¾" for washes)
  • Detail brush (size 0 or 1)

Other Tools:

  • Palette or mixing tray
  • Two water containers (one for clean water, one for rinsing)
  • Pencil (HB or 2B) and eraser
  • Ruler (optional, for composition planning)
  • Paper towels or cloth rag
  • Spray bottle (optional, for keeping paints moist)

About the Tutor:

'Arafat Hosen is an artist and educator with over fifteen years of teaching experience in the Department of Fine Art and Graphic Design at Shanto-Mariam University of Creative Technology in Dhaka, Bangladesh. As an art practitioner, watercolour painting has become a personal and meditative journey of self-inquiry, where the blending of colours reflects movement and uncertainty, revealing new dimensions in visual narratives. Teaching has always been Arafat’s passion, especially the opportunity to meet new people and share stories. These interactions enrich his understanding of social and cultural ideologies, deepening the human experience through art. His work bridges traditional and contemporary practices, grounded in observation and a thoughtful exploration of form, colour, and meaning.'

  • All courses need a minimum number of students to run ("we try our hardest to get those") . If your course does not have enough students it will be cancelled before the commencement and you will be informed.
