Watercolour Painting

Watercolours can be fun, free, experimental and also considered. This course is designed for the total beginner and also those who have dabbled and need a little encouragement. Throughout the course, students will have accomplished the essential techniques needed to begin painting confidently with watercolours. The lessons consist of demonstrations and practical exercises across a range of themes and subjects. With the understanding of varying washes, use of wet in wet and wet on the dry, positive shape and negative space, rendering textures and use of right brushes for the job and the correct papers students will be capable in no time!

Course Outline:

  • Week 1 – Introduction to Watercolour: Watercolour Techniques Project
  • Week 2 – Brushes Techniques: Flat, round, rigger and mop, leaves, branches and foliage
  • Week 3 – Reflections: Windmills
  • Week 4 - A Collection of Small Landscape Projects
  • Week 5 - Negative Painting: Forrest of Trees
  • Week 6, 7 & 8 - Creation of 3 Paintings

Students will be working on Watercolour paintings from handouts during the last 3 classes which students can experiment with. These will include a variety of images, landscapes, animals, flowers or bring your own

Learning Outcome:

  • Creating tone and controlling water washes
  • Basic colour theory, how to mix and apply colours
  • Techniques to render texture
  • When and how to work 'wet-in-wet or on dry
  • The difference in watercolour materials, including papers, brushes and paints

What to bring:

PAINTS:

  • Water Colour Tablets in Pan OR Water Colour Tubes
  • A total of 12 colours ranging from primary colours (red yellow blue) and green and brown.

BRUSHES:

  • Flat: Roymac or Sable No 6
  • Round: Roymac or Sable No. 6, 8, 10, 12
  • A Liner or Rigger Brush
  • Mop Brush Large

PAPER:

  • 300 GSM Paper in a Pad A4 or A3 Sizes The brand Mont Marte have a good beginners quality paper pad. You can get this at $2 shops or on line

EXTRAS:

  • Masking Fluid in a Pen, Stanley Knife, Blue Painters Masking Tape available at Bunnings, Mist Spray Bottle for Water, Sea/Cosmetic Sponge, An Eraser and a 2B pencil

A devoted arts educator, Sonja works to provide a nurturing environment in her classes in which every student feels safe, creating confidence and therefore extending themselves expressively.   • All courses need a minimum number of students to run ("we try our hardest to get those") . If your course does not have enough students it will be cancelled before the commencement and you will be informed.
