Welcome to the IT Explorer’s Club, formerly known as the Step iPad Club, where everyone can explore the digital world in a way that’s easy, fun, and supportive! Whether you’re just getting started with your device or want to learn new tips and tricks, navigating your portable devices, this course is all about helping you feel more confident and capable with technology. We’ll guide you step-by-step through using apps, staying cyber safe, sending emails, and more—all in a friendly and understanding environment where you can go at your own pace.
We’ve designed this course not only to build your tech skills but also to help you connect with others, start conversations, and share your thoughts. Every session is hands-on, practical, and filled with fun activities, where you can feel comfortable asking questions, learning new things, and growing your confidence. Together, we’ll explore the digital world, build friendships, and gain the skills to help you navigate both your device and the world around you.
So, bring your device, your curiosity, and let’s start this adventure together! No prior experience is needed—just an open mind and the excitement to learn.
Course Outline:
This course offers a range of multiple skill-building activities from learning to have a better understanding of your device, basic IT language, navigating apps and being cyber safe, to participating in activities that will expand your knowledge of the world around you. The course has been developed to improve both confidence on your device and confidence in a group setting and offers the perfect amount of practical, hands-on learning, all set in a fun-based learning environment.
Learning Outcomes:
- Increase your understanding of your device (hardware and software)
- Cyber safety tips and how to spot a SCAM
- Learn basic settings and IT language for everyday use
- Navigating your apps, camera and video
- Improve your typing, toggle, copy and paste function
- Building confidence to receive and send emails
- Improve comprehension skills & use of keywords
- Literacy skill building (some numeracy also covered)
- Build your confidence and self-esteem in a group setting
- Build your knowledge about the World Around You to assist with building friendships and forming conversational starters with others
What to bring:
Please bring a pen & your chosen portable device (iPad, Tablet or Laptop)
The STEP program is for persons with an intellectual disability. Each course runs for 2 hours per week. Students will be given a short break during the 2-hour session.
About the Tutor:
With over 10 years of experience teaching students with disabilities in both college and SLES environments, Narelle is a passionate and enthusiastic educator who is dedicated to helping her students improve their digital skills. She believes that technical classes using tablets not only enhance communication but also provide valuable opportunities to improve typing, multi-touch navigation, literacy skills, and foster creativity.
Narelle’s teaching approach centres on creating a collaborative, supportive learning environment that caters to diverse learning styles. She encourages students to ask questions, explore new ideas, and engage with technology in a hands-on, interactive way. This approach nurtures personal growth, problem-solving, and digital confidence. Her classes are designed to be both fun and educational, ensuring that students feel empowered and comfortable as they build their skills.
