What you need to know about this course:

  • New students are expected to attend a mandatory college orientation before course commencement. Orientation times and dates will be advised after enrolment.
  • Classes commence at the beginning of week 1 of each school term
  • There is no training during school holidays
  • Students will be accepted into the class throughout the term
  • Private Facebook groups are used to share resources and learning
  • Resources are provided by SGSCC
  • WiFi is available

Eligibility for “Skilling for Recovery” - Fee-Free nationally accredited training:

Skilling for Recovery is part of a matched funding commitment between the NSW and Australian governments under the JobTrainer Fund.

Skilling for Recovery is a key component of the State’s COVID-19 Recovery Plan.

Skilling for Recovery will help job seekers (including school leavers) reskill, retrain and redeploy the workforce to industries where there are skills shortages and emerging employment opportunities.

Skilling for Recovery offers Fee Free training places to eligible students and funded courses.

Student Eligibility:

If you meet the following criteria you may be eligible to enrol at SGSCC under Skilling for Recovery and receive fee-free accredited training: You must meet all of the following criteria:

  • 15 years old and over; and
  • No longer in secondary education, and
  • Live or work in NSW; and
  • Australian or New Zealand citizen, Australian Permanent Resident or a Humanitarian Visa Holder or a partner visa holder whose sponsor is a humanitarian visa holder.

And meet one of the following:

  • Aged 16 to 24 at commencement of training, regardless of employment status, including Year 12 school leavers, or
  • A person who is a recipient of a Commonwealth Government welfare benefit, or
  • An unemployed person (you do not need to be in receipt of any Commonwealth benefits or registered with Centrelink), or
  • A veteran and their partner, or
  • A person who is currently employed undertaking a specified full or part qualification in the areas such as Aged Care, Digital Skills, Disability Care, Childcare, Training and Education (TAE).
  • An employed person who is expected to become unemployed who falls into one of the following categories:
  • Stood down/ furloughed employee
  • Person who has been employed for 6 months or less
  • Low skilled/ unskilled employee
  • Workers in declining industries

Definition of an employed person who is ‘expected to become unemployed'

Skilling for Recovery primarily seeks to help unemployed people to re-train or for young people to start their career, but it will also support people expected to become unemployed. This can cover instances such as: companies in declining industries, people whose employment is conditional on immediately undertaking work relevant training, and workers who have been stood down or furloughed.

Below are definitions for each of the four categories:

  • Stood down/ furloughed employee: Employee that has been stood down or an employee that is at risk of becoming unemployed and requires upskilling or reskilling for a new role and employment elsewhere.
  • Person starting a job (employed for 6 months or less): employed on condition of receiving training to build capacity and capability for the job role. This would be within the first 6 months of employment.
  • Low skilled/unskilled employee: Existing employee, with or without relevant skills or previous qualification up to Certificate III, that requires training to upskill to secure ongoing employment or future employment
  • Workers in declining industries: Workers at any company in an agreed declining industry (e.g. international travel industry) who require upskilling/reskilling for redeployment.

SGSCC will advise you on course availability as well as the evidence requirements to validate your eligibility.

All Skilling for Recovery enrolments must occur no later than 31 December 2022.
