Become an important part of children’s development and learning. This course aims to develop the skills and knowledge required for the roles of educators in early childhood education and care who work in regulated children’s education and care service in Australia. Educators support children’s well being and development in the context of an approved learning framework. Educators use a range of well developed skills and knowledge, using discretion and judgement when carrying out their work in the context of established policies and procedures. Depending on the setting, educators may work in long day care centres, family day care, pre-schools, or kindergartens. There are many opportunities for career growth within the early childhood education industry.

What you need to know about this course:

• New students are expected to attend a mandatory college orientation before course commencement. Orientation times and dates will be advised after enrolment.
• Classes commence at the beginning of week 1 of each school term
• Classes are not held during the school holidays
• Students will be accepted into the class throughout the term
• You will need to plan for approximately 5-8 hours a week at home to complete assessment tasks
• Private Facebook groups are used to share resources and learning
• Resources are provided by SGSCC
• Student lounge available
• WiFi is available

Course entry requirements:

• There are no formal educational requirements for entry into this course
• Recognition for units may be granted based on previous learning, studies, work and/or life experiences
• Current National Police Check (arranged through SGSCC)
• Complete an SGSCC English language, literacy and numeracy assessment to determine that the student has sufficient skills to successfully complete the course
• Access to computer/internet
• Facebook account for private class communication and access to learning resources (assistance creating an account can be arranged through SGSCC)
• Note taking materials
• Attend work placement (arranged by SGSCC) and be workplace assessed (minimum 160 hours)
• Unique Student Identifier (can be arranged through SGSCC)

Do you need to complete any work placement hours?

• Yes, you need to complete 160 hours (20 days) in an early childhood education centre that caters for children up to 6 years
• You will work as a student (unpaid) during work placement
• Before commencing your work placement you will need a ‘Working with Children’ check and a current National Criminal Record history check. The college can help you apply for this
• SGSCC also offers a simulated learning environment

Will you need to sit for any exams?

• No. This is a competency-based course
• Tell us, then show us you understand and are able to implement the learning you have received
• You will be required to complete competently assessment tasks for all 18 units of learning

To be deemed competent:

• You will receive clear assessment instructions
• You must complete all assessments to a satisfactory standard as set by your trainer
• These are assessed by your trainer
• Opportunities will be provided for trainers to support students and to resubmit their assessments if required

When you have completed and been deemed competent you can:

• Progress with SGSCC to CHC40221 Certificate IV in School Based Education Support, or the CHC50121 Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care.
