Learn to Sew From Scratch - New!

Learn to Sew from Scratch is a practical and creative workshop designed for complete beginners or those wanting to refresh their sewing skills. In this supportive Saturday class, students will gain confidence using a sewing machine while learning essential garment construction techniques used in the fashion and sewing industry.

Throughout the workshop, participants will explore a variety of sewing techniques including sewing seams, darts, pockets, and inserting both standard and invisible zippers. Students will also develop an understanding of fabric handling, machine setup, sewing terminology, and safe sewing practices.

This hands-on course focuses on building foundational skills through guided demonstrations and practical exercises, allowing students to develop confidence at their own pace. By the end of the workshop, participants will have gained valuable sewing knowledge and practical techniques that can be applied to future fashion, alterations, and creative sewing projects. Perfect for hobbyists, beginners, or anyone interested in learning a lifelong creative skill in a fun and encouraging environment.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Safely operate and set up a sewing machine
  • Identify basic sewing tools and equipment
  • Sew a variety of seams and finishes
  • Construct darts, pockets, and zippers
  • Follow basic sewing techniques and instructions
  • Demonstrate safe sewing and workspace practices develop confidence in basic garment construction skills
  • Complete simple sewing samples and projects independently with confidence
  • Time permitting, we aim to complete 10 different techniques to create a booklet.

What to bring:

  • Enthusiasm and a willingness to learn
  • Calico or optional re-use a old clean bedsheet ideally a solid colour
  • Fabric pieces pre-cut to these measurement
  • 1 × 18cm zipper
  • 1 × 18cm invisible zipper
  • Fabric scissors
  • Sewing equipment
  • Pen and notepad

About the Tutor:

'Mora Cura brings over 35 years of experience in the fashion industry to her teaching. She holds an Advanced Diploma in Applied Fashion Design and Technology and a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment. After a long career in the industry, Mora transitioned into teaching and now shares her passion for fashion, sewing, and design through practical, beginner-friendly classes. Her aim is to make sewing approachable, enjoyable, and empowering for all students.'

  • To ensure resources are ready for you at the start of your course, we ask you ideally enrol at least one week before the course commences.
  • All courses need a minimum number of students to run ("we try our hardest to get those") . If your course does not have enough students it will be cancelled before the commencement and you will be informed.
