Intro to Oil Painting with Tamara

In this course you will learn to easily impress your viewer by learning the basic techniques, we will look at starting in washes and gradually in thickening up oil paint layers to make yummy surfaces. We will be working from images that you bring yourself and translate them onto our canvas/boards using grids and measurements. I recommend you have a selection to choose from with me, so please bring a variety of images in good quality colour photocopy A4 size is perfect. complete beginners will start their paintings tonally and slowly introducing colour. This course is not intended to be taken too seriously, The main thing is we have fun and bring out that spark that we all need and by the end you will have a body of work and pieces for exhibition.

Course Outline:

  • learning basics to intermediate Oil painting
  • working on a self directed body of work
  • getting ready to exhibit

Learning Outcomes:

  • learn to prime your canvas/board
  • learn to sketch up your idea onto the canvas or board
  • learn to tonally paint your work using earth colours
  • learn to apply colour and mix colours with confidence
  • thicken up your painting using a more confident approach like Ala Prima
  • get a body of work together
  • select the best work for exhibition

What to bring:

  • Art Spectrum 40ml Oil paints: Titanium white, Yellow Ochre, Spectrum Yellow, Spectrum Red, Spectrum Crimson (Alizarin hue), Phthalo Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Phthalo Green, Spectrum Green Light, Spectrum Violet, Lilac, Burnt Umber, Raw Umber and Raw Sienna
  • Matisse Derivan Gesso for priming canvas or board
  • Painting canvas or Gesso Board or Oil Sketch Pad
  • Art Spectrum Stand oil 100ml
  • Art Spectrum Odourless Solvent 100ml
  • 2b graffite pensil
  • rubber
  • sharpener
  • ruler
  • 2 x small glass jar with lids
  • hogs hair brushes – or oil paint brush sets varied sizes
  • Rag or Apron
  • selection of images photocopied from officeworks at A4 size minimum to work from.

About the Tutor:

'Tamara Pottier studied at the National Art School obtaining a Bachelor Degree in Fine Arts with a Ceramics Major. Ceramics and Oil Painting are her main practices having been exhibited and represented by Gallery One88 Katoomba since 2018'

  • To ensure resources are ready for you at the start of your course, we ask you ideally enrol at least one week before the course commences.
  • All courses need a minimum number of students to run ("we try our hardest to get those") . If your course does not have enough students it will be cancelled before the commencement and you will be informed.
