Creative Writing Tutoring - Years 3, 4, 5 & 6 St George & Sutherland Community College

Creative Writing Tutoring - Years 3, 4, 5 & 6

Creative Writing program has been devised to cater for the educational needs of students who wish to explore the world of creativity. Professional qualified and experienced teachers help your child realise their full potential through formal instruction in small class settings.

Throughout the program the students will be shown how to create well-structured informative and persuasive texts in terms of topic, purpose, audience and language by drafting, proofreading and editing for familiar and unfamiliar audiences.

The students will practise the correct usage of simple and complex sentences, paragraphing, and punctuation and grammatical features characteristic of the various texts to support meaning. Students will be shown how to best tackle the spelling of familiar and unfamiliar words using knowledge of letter–sound correspondence, regular and irregular spelling patterns, spelling rules and a range of other strategies. They will use increasing fluency when writing, applying NSW Foundation Style as appropriate, and develop digital publishing skills.

The following will be covered depending on the needs of the individual student:

  • Creation of literary texts that explore students' own experiences and imagining
  • Processes of imagining, organising, analysing, drafting, appraising, synthesising, reflecting and refining students own writing
  • Exploring how authors and illustrators make stories exciting, moving and absorbing and hold readers' interest by using various techniques, for example character development and plot tension
  • Learning how to use the shaping and arrangement of textual elements to explore and express ideas, emotions and values
  • Understanding and using appropriate language forms, features and structures of texts
  • Identifying and using creative language features in imaginative, texts that contribute to engagement
  • How vocabulary establishes setting and atmosphere
