Steady, Stable and Able - Between Terms

This class focuses on improving balance and strength, both of which are vitally important for older adults. Using hand weights, resistance bands, gym equipment, and bodyweight exercises, we will work to strengthen the major muscle groups. Specific balance exercises will help to improve balance and stability and protect against falls.

Course Outline:

Each week’s class will include a warm-up, strength and balance exercises, stretching and cooldown. The following will be covered:

  • Various factors affecting balance
  • Assessing your own balance
  • Why balance declines with age, and what the research tells us about improving it
  • Importance of lower body strength
  • The best exercises to improve balance
  • Balance exercises to practice at home

Learning Outcomes;

Students will learn:

  • What factors affect balance, and which can be modified
  • What exercises are the most effective in improving balance
  • What is the relationship between strength and balance
  • What they can do outside the class to improve their balance
  • The most important exercise principles for older adults

What to bring:

  • You will need a resistance band (at least one metre long). Bring your own or purchase from the instructor at first-class ($8.00).
  • Bottle of water
  • towel
  • Please wear supportive shoes and comfortable clothing for exercise

  • To ensure resources are ready for you at the start of your course, we ask you ideally enrol at least one week before the course commences.
  • All courses need a minimum number of students to run ("we try our hardest to get those") . If your course does not have enough students it will be cancelled before the commencement and you will be informed.
