Realism Sketch/Paint & Portraiture

In this course you will not only learn the basics of sketching but also acrylic painting techniques of still life and portraiture. The first half of the entire course will be focused on still lifes, you will begin with the essentials of sketching which transitions into a painting class. In the second half of the course we will start with portrait sketching also transitioning into portrait painting where you will learn how to utilize proportion, perspective, light/shadow and tones together to complete a realism painting.

Course Outline:

  • Week 1* learn the basics of proportion, perspective and light/shadow values with sketching still life objects.
  • Week 2* Challenge yourself to multiple objects of still life and learn crosshatching techniques
  • Week 3* Start painting on Canvas utilising the fundamental sketching skills you have acquired.
  • Week 4* BYO objects for your own personal still life painting and start to develop your colour mixing skills.
  • Week 5* Introduction to portraiture , gain an understanding of facial proportions with sketching.
  • Week 6* Begin to challenge yourself with full body portrait sketching and learn skin tone hues.
  • Week 7* BYO photo and start portrait painting on Canvas utilising the fundamental knowledge you have acquired.
  • Week 8* Finish your Painting, synchronise your knowledge and work on the details.

Learning Outcomes:

In this course you will learn;

  • basics of proportion, perspective and light/shadow values
  • cross hatching techniques
  • facial and body proportions
  • colour mixing and tones
  • brush techniques
  • eraser and kneaded eraser techniques

What to bring:

  • A3 sketching paper
  • Hb – 6b pencils
  • Eraser and soft kneaded eraser
  • Acrylic Paint : Minimum 5 colours of white, black, red, blue and yellow

Titanium White, Lemon yellow, Medium Yellow, Orange, Vermillion, Yellow Ochre, Crimson, Brilliant Red, Phthalo Blue, Monastral Green, Cerulean Blue, Deep Cyan, Veridian, Sap Green, Raw Sienna, Lamp Black, Burnt Umber and Burnt Sienna

  • Brushes: 3 or more flat brushes in different sizes, 3 or more round brushes in different sizes, 1 wide brush
  • 1 rag
  • 1 palette or a plate
  • 2 canvases
  • A jar for water

  • All courses need a minimum number of students to run (\_"we try our hardest to get those"\_) . If your course does not have enough students it will be cancelled before the commencement and you will be informed.
