Photography Field Trip - Sylvan Grove Native Gardens

Being in the Moment Photography can be called Slow Photography, Purposeful Photography or Contemplative Photography, it is about seeing and connecting with what is in front of you, using a camera, to not only capture that moment forever, but to also enjoy that moment in time, of the scene, subject or object we are actually observing / Photographing as you are being mindful.

Your Being in the Moment Photography skills will also help you to observe develop, your creativity and artistic skills, and how to express yourself through your Photography, no matter where you are or what you are Photographing or not, this field trip will expand and enhance your observational skills not what level of photography you are at.

Skill Level:

This field trip is suitable for all levels of Photography; for anyone, whom can use their camera, and you will still be able to do this field trip whether or not, you have a thorough working knowledge of your camera and controls and or the shutter and aperture settings.

What you will learn:

  • How to observe and 'really see'
  • Simple photography techniques that will enable you to compose any photograph and to capture what you actually ‘see’ and 'feel'
  • Finding and interpreting the light
  • Close up photography
  • How Black & White can emphasise through light and shadow
  • How colour can capture mood

What to bring:

Audio player and headphones:
If you have either Please bring;

  • audio player / smartphone / iPod / mp3 player or similar with some of your favourite relaxation music / music
  • headphones

Camera Equipment;

  • Any adjustable digital DSLR / 4/3rds / Mirrorless or all in one; i.e Compact camera / Bridge or Superzoom with zoom lens
  • Batterie(s) charged and ready x 2 if you have them
  • Memory card(s) x 2 if you have them

Lens(es)
Bring any Zoom lens(es) you have

  • wide angle to telephoto i.e 18 to 55 mm, tele zoom, 70 – 200mm etc
  • Prime lens(es) one focal length i.e. especially wide angle to standard focal length; 20 mm , 28mm, 35 mm, 50 mm etc
  • If you have any close up kit; macro lens, or close up filters, or extension tubes, please bring them, but not essential for this field trip.

Camera note; Any adjustable digital camera / digital Compact camera with a built in zoom / single fixed focal length lens / close up function are fine too, as long as you can make some adjustments to the camera; shutter speeds, apertures etc (check your instruction manual for more details).

Additional items:

Lunch/food: We will be having a short break for lunch and help for students during the break

  • It is strongly advisable to bring your ample water at least 2 × 600ml

  • A towel for yourself and your camera
  • Mini umbrella (no large umbrellas for safety reasons)

  • Please note;

General photography is permitted, but; (close-up photos of families / adults and especially identifying children under 18 years old should not be taken, or be published, unless a model waiver has been signed).
Parking fees / transport to and from, water, drinks, snacks, food etc are not included

This field trip will go ahead even if it is raining lightly, keep an eye on the weather forecast BOM website / app

With over 48 years of experience in Photography and camera equipment, 25 years as a Press Photographer and over 19 years of digital photography and post processing, I am now a Professional Photography Tutor, teaching all levels of Photography at SGSCC.

I am passionate about Photography and love to teach and share both classic and modern Photography techniques, and believe it is the most significant visual medium on this planet.

My Short and Mini Photography Courses, Field Trips and Classes are not just about learning Photography, but experiences with like-minded people whom want to learn, share and enjoy the Photography learning experience together, in a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere."

  • To ensure resources are ready for you at the start of your course, we ask you ideally enrol at least one week before the course commences.
  • All courses need a minimum number of students to run ("we try our hardest to get those") . If your course does not have enough students it will be cancelled prior to the commencement and you will be informed.
