For Pattern Making!
Have you always been fascinated by fashion design? Join us at SGSCC and get creative within this sewing class, which will help you to take your pattern-making skills to the next level and learn various techniques of pattern making. This course is designed for beginners to advanced students. Come along, learn to sew and design and sew your clothes! Pattern making offers the designer shortcuts in executing basic parts of a garment within a design. Blocks are formed through construction using measurements of the individual.
Our experienced tutor will help you with the creation of your designs all the way through and support you by providing useful tips and tricks to make your very own design come to life step by step. Go through the various stages of making your fashion from the design, the fitting up to the cutting process and bringing everything together to finish your very own piece of fashion created by yourself!
Course Outline:
Week 1 Introduction – assess sewing knowledge of students – list of equipment
Week 2 Basic skirt block – pattern and fitting
Week 3 Basic bodice block
Week 4-6 Making pattern – cutting our ready for fitting – this takes approx 2-3 weeks depending on students ability
Week 7 Trousers block
Week 8 Making pattern – cutting out ready for fitting
Learning Outcome:
- Construction of a design and research on fashion trends that are functional as well as artistically pleasing.
- Basic fundamentals of dart manipulation.
- Construction and forming patterns of a simple dress, princess line dress, raglans, extended sleeves, blouses, collars, skirt variations, pants – jeans and baggy pants, jackets, coats, undergarments, jumpsuits, and many more designs. Whatever is in fashion!
- Blocks for woven and stretch fabric, blocks for pants and raglans.
What to bring:
- L shaped plastic ruler 60x35. Order online or buy from sewing machine shops (Janome)
- Butcher paper (white) 1mts x 10mts on the roll (Officeworks)
- Lead pencils
- 14 Plastic folder with sleeves
- Rubber
- Sharpener
- Tape Measure
- Paper & Fabric scissors
- Pins
- 30cm Plastic ruler
- Grease proof paper (Woolworths or Coles)
- Calculator
- Wear something light on the 1st lesson to take accurate measurements
For Dressmaking!
Join us at SGSCC and get creative within this sewing class and design and create your fashion! Garments in woven and stretch fabric are created with sewing techniques which will be demonstrated through the course. Various techniques of commercial patterns will be shown that will highlight the assets of your figure.
Our experienced tutor will help you with the creation of your designs all the way through and support you by providing useful tips and tricks to make your very own design come to life step by step. Save money by making your own and your children’s clothes. Pattern reading and garment construction and care and use of the machine are a feature of this course.
Course Outline:
Week 1 Introduction – requirements
Week 2 Construction of skirt – reading patterns
Week 3 Laying out of pattern and fabric
Week 4 Fitting and sewing
Week 5 Demonstration of zippers, waistbands, etc.
Week 6 Construction of blouses, collars, and cuffs
Week 7 Sleeve placement, buttonholes
Week 8 Finishing above
Learning Outcome:
- Pattern alteration – Recording all of your measurements on charts, noting any differences learning to alter a pattern to confirm your measurements before cutting the fabric. * Fabric preparation and cutting out – straight grain of the fabric

- How to thread the sewing machine, practicing, straight seams, darts, and finishing seams with an overlocker in class.
- Lap zipper and invisible zipper application.
- Sewing techniques for using a stretch or woven fabric.
- Interfacings, hem finishes.
- Buttonholes, hooks.
- Facing, pockets, waistband application.
What to bring:
- Simple straight or Aline Skirt commercial pattern
- A4 Plastic Folder
- Greaseproof paper (Woolworths or Coles)
- Woven fabric for shirt
- Pins (with the balls on th end) in container
- Sewing needles
- Lead pencils, rubber and sharpener
- Fabric & paper scissors
- Tape measure
- Guttermann thread to match fabric
- Your sewing machine or you can use the College sewing machines
About the Tutor:
'I am passionate about fashion which includes designing, pattern making, the use of overlocker techniques, and dressmaking. I have been teaching for forty years and find my students are always enthusiastic about learning new skills.
Having completed my Fashion Certificate in honours grade I went to become a TAFE teacher of fashion after which I have been at SGSCC for 25 years. For a while, I also enjoyed specialising in bridal and evening clothes for individual people. Some of my creations have appeared in Studio Brides and Wedding Sydney Magazine.' Andi

- To ensure resources are ready for you at the start of your course, we ask you ideally enrol at least one week before the course commences.
- All courses need a minimum number of students to run ("we try our hardest to get those") . If your course does not have enough students it will be cancelled before the commencement and you will be informed.
