Pattern Making - Advanced
This course is designed to create blocks or templated for bodice, skirt and sleeve, that are constructed with your measurements to start the foundation of pattern making. A knowledge of sewing skills, good maths skills for measurements and calculations and to be able to draw freehand. These are many of the skills that will be taught in the lessons. Blocks will be formed for woven and stretch fabric. There will be a plan of action to start pattern making of dresses, skirts, tops, jackets, vests, etc. Pants construction will also be introduced into course. By the end of the term, you will be able to interpret a design concept and put it on paper to form your patterns to your body.
Course Outline:
Week 1 Introduction – assess sewing knowledge of students – list of equipment
Week 2 Basic skirt block – pattern and fitting
Week 3 Basic bodice block
Week 4-6 Making pattern – cutting our ready for fitting – this takes approx 2-3 weeks depending on students ability
Week 7 Trousers block
Week 8 Making pattern – cutting out ready for fitting
Course Outcomes:
Week 1 Introduction to pattern making: construction of bodice front + back.
Week 2 Skirts front and back.
Week 3 Sleeve construction, patterns formed, and calico toile is tested from patterns.
Week 4 Fitting of calico, any alteration Blocks are formed.
Week 5 Continuation of blocks, patters are perfected.
Week 6 Pattern making will begin a dress (woven fabric). Designing of a dress, demonstration of interpreting design to form patterns. Dress will be designed using blocks formed in class.
Week 7 Plan of how the garment is assembled with sewing techniques.
What to bring:
- L shaped plastic ruler 60x35. Order online or buy from sewing machine shops (Janome)
- Butcher paper (white) 1mtsx10mts on the roll (Officeworks)
- Lead pencils
- 14 Plastic folder with sleeves
- Rubber
- Sharpener
- Tape Measure
- Paper & Fabric scissors
- Pins
- 30cm Plastic ruler
- Grease proof paper (Woolworths or Coles)
- Calculator
- Wear something light on the 1st lesson to take accurate measurements.
Further Learning:
Term 2 Manipulating darts, various sleeves, collars, and skirts.
Term 3 Adapting patterns to students' particular designs
The tutor will contact students before the course starts.
About the tutor:
'I am passionate about fashion which includes designing, pattern making, the use of overlocker techniques, and dressmaking. I have been teaching for forty years and find my students are always enthusiastic about learning new skills.
Having completed my Fashion Certificate in honours grade I went to become a TAFE teacher of fashion after which I have been at SGSCC for 25 years. For a while, I also enjoyed specialising in bridal and evening clothes for individual people. Some of my creations have appeared in Studio Brides and Wedding Sydney Magazine.' Andi
