Cake & Cupcake Decorating - Beginners
Did you always want to make great sweet treats yourself but you don’t know where to start? Join us at SGSCC and have fun creating your very own sweet treats in a fun and encouraging environment. Our experienced tutor will show you baking tips and tricks that will make sure your sweet treats turn out great and explain everything to you step by step.
Learn the essentials correctly from the start. Learn how to make a great buttercream and the basics of buttercream piping. You will also learn how to colour fondant, cover cupcakes and a single layer cake with fondant and master the art of making edible fondant toppers and decorations. We will have fun using edible lustre dust and glitters that will give your decorations that extra touch.
Course Outline:
Week 1 Fondant basics – colour fondant, make shapes, glitter and lustre dust
Week 2 Fondant essentials – cupcake fondant textures, patterns, cachous, themes i.e. pig, bear, owl, dog, babyface, lady beetle
Week 3 Buttercream fun – make, colour and pipe buttercream basics – rose, star, swirl, round plain etc
Week 4 Large buttercream cake – learn to cut and pipe a big cake with buttercream
Week 5 Large fondant cake – learn how to level and cover a big cake in fondant
Week 6 Giant cupcake – learn how to construct a giant cupcake cake with buttercream and fondant
Week 7 Multi-colour piping – learn how to prepare and pipe Cupcakes and a large cake with multiple buttercream colours
Week 8 Large textured cake learn to cover a large cake in textured fondant
Learning Outcome:
- Learn how to decorate cupcakes and cakes in fondant and buttercream
- Learn ways to decorate cakes and cupcakes the modern way, saving time and money
- Have fun whilst learning something new
What to bring:
Equipment required for 1st lesson:
- 6 x uniced cupcakes
- Rolling pin (acrylic is ideal)
- Corn flour
- Edible glitter
- Edible lustre dust
- Thin paint brush that’s never been used
- Rose spirit 20ml
- 2 x small cups
- Cupcake carrier
- 200gm white fondant
- 2 gel colours of your choosing
- Set of circle cutters
- Apron
- Tea towel
- A couple of ejector cutters in any shape of your choosing
- I will provide a more detailed list of what to bring each week during each class
Safety First:
Please ensure you wear closed in shoes, long pants and ensure long hair is tied back.
About the tutor:
'Carly has been decorating cakes and cupcakes for over 7 years. Carly has been teaching at ‘Cake It Up’ a local business that hosts fun and entertaining cupcake decorating parties for kids, and hosting specialty cake workshops for adults. Carly has also been working in the cake retail industry until recently, she has built up quite a lot of knowledge that she loves to share with her classes. She loves teaching and watching the joy on peoples faces as their creative talents come out when they are decorating. Carly believes everyone has it in them to create cupcake and cake masterpieces if they are brave enough to try.'

- To ensure resources are ready for you at the start of your course, we ask you ideally enrol at least one week before the course commences.
- All courses need a minimum number of students to run ("we try our hardest to get those") . If your course does not have enough students it will be cancelled before the commencement and you will be informed.
