Award-winning author of both fiction and non- fiction, Stella Tarakson will help you discover how to turn your dreams into money-making reality. Stella has written hundreds of magazine articles and dozens of books, and she uses her broad experience to help guide you, whatever your writing goals may be.

Over two Saturdays we’ll examine many writing avenues, some of which you might not have considered before. These including blogging, ezines and magazine articles, novels and non-fiction books! We also look at how to approach publishers in a business-like and confident manner, maximizing your chance of success. Stella has a background in law, which she uses to identify the potential pitfalls in publishing contracts and discuss some possible solutions. Writing professionally is also about knowing how to sell yourself! Learn about the various options such as guest posts, content marketing etc. No matter whether you’re aiming for a freelance writing job, a passive income or earn money with your skills full time, our experienced trainer and author knows the tips and tricks that will help you to turn your writing into profit!

Course Outline:

Week 1:

  • Blogging – setting up a blog, how to make money from blogging.
  • Social platforms (e.g. blogs, facebook and twitter) – why they matter so much.
  • Writing for magazines and ezines – how to write articles that fit the market, and how to pitch your idea to a publisher.
  • The business side of getting published – how to issue a tax invoice, getting an ABN, keeping track of submissions and payments

Week 2:

  • Novels – writing tips, finding a publisher, writing an eye-catching synopsis.
  • Non-fiction books – studying the market, writing an effective proposal.
  • Publishing contracts – what can you expect?
  • The publishing process – what happens after you sign that book deal?
  • Self-publishing (printed books and ebooks) – what you need to consider

Learning Outcome:

By the end of the course, participants will have an understanding of:

  • The importance of social media for writers.
  • The form and content of an effective blog, and how to monetise it.
  • The market for magazine and ezine articles.
  • How to conduct and write an interview-based feature article.
  • How to query a magazine editor.
  • The fiction and non-fiction book markets.
  • Tips to improve your style.
  • How to create a book proposal.
  • How to approach a publisher in a way to maximise your chance of success.
  • How to publish a book. The publishing process.
  • Publishing contracts.
  • The business side of being a writer.

What to bring:

  • Pen and paper or laptop, whichever you prefer
  • If there is a particular magazine you would like to write for, please bring a copy with you.

About the Tutor:

Stella is a lawyer-turned-author who has won several awards for her work. Over the years she’s written books for adults, schools, and children, and has enjoyed every minute! She loves sharing her passion for writing and the knowledge she’s gained and has been running writing workshops with the community college for nine years. Other Information:

  • To ensure resources are ready for you at the start of your course, we ask you ideally enrol at least one week before the course commences.
  • All courses need a minimum number of students to run ("we try our hardest to get those") . If your course does not have enough students it will be cancelled prior to the commencement and you will be informed.

Online Delivery Information

Remote learning for this course is at scheduled class times and sessions. It could include:

  • Livestream video classes online;
  • Interaction with your tutor and other students during livestream video sessions.

Please note: You will need access to the internet and a smartphone, tablet, computer or laptop in order to participate in the livestream video classes.

Face-to-face classes may resume at one of our campuses before the end of the course, depending on discussions between the tutor and students as well as the Government’s recommendations at the time, including appropriate social distancing measures, hand washing and other hygiene protocols.
