Watercolour Painting for Beginners

Learn the basics of watercolour painting – watercolour washes, colour mixing, types of watercolour brushes and paint. Learn about the transparency of watercolour. This is a class for beginners to explore watercolour painting in a step by step class. No painting experience necessary.

What to bring:

  • 3 tubes watercolour: Ultramarine Blue or Cobalt Blue, Alizarin Crimson or Permanent Rose and Cadmium yellow (or bring blue, red and yellow tubes of artist quality watercolour paint). Optional extra tubes: Raw Sienna and Burnt Sienna
  • 3 watercolour brushes: medium round brush with a good point, small dagger brush, medium hake brush.
  • 3 sheets A4 watercolour paper (or 3 quarter sheets) - must be quality watercolour paper such as Arches or Saunders Waterford or you will be disappointed with the results.

Additional Materials:

  • 2 boards larger than your paper
  • Masking tape
  • Spray bottle
  • Old towel for the table
  • masking Fluid + old brush/applicator
  • Pen (suitable for a pen & wash eg. waterproof Fineliner)
  • Pencil & Rubber
  • 2 water jars

  • 3 tubes 5 ml Holbein watercolour paint
  • 3 sheets 300 gsm watercolour paper (Saunders Waterford)
  • 3 sheets watercolour paper for testing colours
  • 3 watercolour brushes – round, hake & dagger
  • Masking tape
  • Waterproof board
  • Container (as prop)
  • Tissues

Students will need to bring a HB pencil, rubber and 2 water jars.
