Watercolour Painting - Beginners and Intermediate

Do you love watercolour paintings? And do you want to learn how to paint and create your very own watercolour painting? Join us at SGSCC for this fun art class. Start painting if you haven’t tried it before or learn more complex techniques to enhance your skills in that creative art course within a friendly and inspiring environment.

Learn watercolour painting: watercolour washes, colour mixing, composition tips and the importance of a focal point. Learn how to create watercolour paintings that glow. This is a class for beginners and intermediate watercolour painters to explore watercolour painting in a step by step class.

Course Outline:

  • Introduction to watercolour techniques including washes, wet-in-wet, layering, splattering, spraying, wet-on-dry
  • Composition and the importance of a focal point
  • How to create transparent layers of watercolour
  • All topics are supplied and will include landscape and nature subjects
  • Colour exploration – hue, value, intensity
  • We will start with a loose quick organic sketch and create a pen and wash

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand wet-in-wet watercolour application
  • Understand wet-on-dry watercolour application
  • Obtain knowledge of the many ways to compose a painting
  • Obtain confidence in colour mixing
  • Learn the value of a limited palette
  • Learn the value of quality watercolour paper and paint

What to bring:

  • 3 tubes watercolour: Blue (Ultramarine Blue or Cobalt Blue), Red (Alizarin Crimson or Permanent Rose) and Cadmium yellow (or bring blue, red and yellow tubes of artist quality watercolour paint). Optional extras: raw sienna, burnt sienna, cerulean, ultramarine, viridian, hookers green, lemon yellow, magenta. If possible, avoid buying a box of cheap watercolours. You will get much better value by buying a few quality tubes.
  • Watercolour paper: A4, A3 or quarter sheets – must be quality watercolour paper such as Arches or Saunders Waterford or you will be disappointed with the results.
  • Brushes: 2 medium round brushes with good points, one or two flat brushes (1/2 inch and 1 inch would be perfect), liner brush, medium hake brush

Additional Materials:

Starter kit available for $160 (contact Marion 0411 665 443), or bring the following items to class:

  • Watercolour tubes: Ultramarine blue, Permanent rose, Cadmium yellow, Cobalt Turquoise and white gouache (or bring minimum of blue, red and yellow tubes of artist quality watercolour paint). Optional extra tubes include: Magenta, Viridian, Cascade Green, Winsor Blue or Phthalo blue or Ultramarine blue
  • Watercolour brushes: 2 medium round brushes with a good point, small liner brush (or rigger or small dagger brush), medium hake brush.
  • A4 watercolour paper, or A3/quarter sheets – must be quality paper such as Arches or Saunders Waterford. Separate sheet of watercolour paper for testing your colours. Marion uses 300 gsm Saunders Waterford rough watercolour sheets
  • Boards larger than your paper, HB pencil, eraser, masking tape, watercolour palette, spray bottle, old towel for the table, tissues, masking fluid + old brush/applicator, 2 water containers
  • Water soluble marker and a permanent marker/pen
