Watercolour Painting - Beginners and Intermediate

Create watercolour paintings while enjoying watercolour washes and colour mixing. Learn the basics of tonal variation, types of watercolour brushes, types of watercolour paint and focal point placement to create a visually satisfying image. We will start with a loose quick sketch. This course is best suited for beginners and intermediate..

What to bring:

  • 3 tubes watercolour: Blue (Ultramarine Blue or Cobalt Blue), Red (Alizarin Crimson or Permanent Rose) and Cadmium yellow (or bring blue, red and yellow tubes of artist quality watercolour paint). Optional extras: raw sienna, burnt sienna, cerulean, ultramarine, viridian, hookers green, lemon yellow, magenta. If possible, avoid buying a box of cheap watercolours. You will get much better value by buying a few quality tubes.
  • Watercolour paper: A4, A3 or quarter sheets – must be quality watercolour paper such as Arches or Saunders Waterford or you will be disappointed with the results.
  • Brushes – Medium round brush with a point, small dagger brush, medium hake brush.

Additional Materials:

  • Masking tape
  • Pen (suitable for a pen & wash eg. waterproof Fineliner)
  • Pencil & Rubber
  • Masking fluid
  • 2 xSupport boards (options include corflute or any light weight waterproof board to fit your paper)
  • Tissues (cheap are best)
  • 2 x water containers
  • Palette
  • Old towel (to collect water run-off)
  • Spray bottle
