Still Life Painting, Drawing & Mixed Media

Did you always admire still life paintings and did you always create one yourself? Join us at SGSCC and learn how to paint your very own still life painting! Get creative in a relaxed environment and come along to this fun art class!
Still Life draws upon objects from everyday life as a springboard for creativity and expression. This theme has engaged artists throughout history from the masters of art such as Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse right through to the contemporary Howard Hodgkin and Patrick Caulfield. It continues to fascinate and inspire work today with composition, light and colour common features that convey a sense of time and space. Immerse yourself in mixed media techniques and styles to enjoy exploring the fundamentals of Still Life. You will experiment in drawing, painting and collage towards producing a dynamic mixed media composition.

Course Outline:

  • Week 1: Composition & Collage
  • Week 2: Light & Tonal studies
  • Week 3: Colour & Paint techniques
  • Week 4: Final composition in mixed media

Learning Outcome:

  • Understand the fundamentals of still life
  • Appreciate the work of master artists
  • Engage with a range of media to express a personal response to still life

What to bring:

  • Pencils
  • A3 sketching paper
  • Acrylic paints and/or watercolours
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Brushes
  • An A3 (or larger) size canvas or watercolour paper for a final composition.
  • You may also wish to bring in your own selection of objects and fabric to set up a personalised still life.

About the Tutor:

'Laura Kneebone is a graduate of the University of the Creative Arts and Institute of Education, University of London. She has worked as a fine artist and educator between Zimbabwe, England and Australia art for over 20 years now. She lives in Bundeena where she enjoys being part of a thriving art community. Laura is frequently involved in art commissions and creative initiatives alongside her painting practice, teaching and exhibitions. Laura is also now a listed artist on the Bundeena Maianbar Art Trail, Laura Challiss Kneebone @studio 22.'
