Seniors Morning - Term 1 2019

Includes an hour of Gentle Exercise (participants must be able to lie on floor), morning tea and a two hour class that changes every term. This term features Karen Mutton with: “Appreciating the Architecture of the Ancient World”. This unique 4 week course will take students on a journey through the ancient Middle East/Egypt, Europe, Asia and the Americas/Pacific, learning about these ancient cultures through their surviving and lost magnificent buildings. With the aid of slides and animations, we will learn about archaeology, art, political structures and religion while taking an armchair tour through temples, palaces, tombs, homes and civic buildings of the ancient world. Last for weeks features Pat Cranney with "Masters of the Silver Screen: The Great Directors"The Golden Age of Hollywood lasted from the late 1920s to the 1960s and was a time when technology in film began to emerge amongst the Hollywood glamour. The release of the movie The Jazz Singer in 1927 marked the end of the silent film era and the start of the new era. This course will look at some of the masters behind your favourite Hollywood masterpieces. We’ll explore some of the stylish dramas and comedies of Billy Wilder, John Huston, George Cukor and more – including an amazing woman who managed to make her mark in the male-dominated world of Hollywood dream factory!

Week 1- Middle East:

  • Brief introduction to archeology with a review of ancient Mesopotamia, including Hanging gardens of Babylon and Sumer.
  • The oldest building in the world, Gobleki Tepi in Turkey will come to light in a special animation.
  • The amazing pyramids of Egypt and treasures of Luxor.

Week 2 – Ancient Europe:

Hypogeum and prehistoric temples of Malta
The Palace of Knossos and Minoan culture
Classical Greece- including the acropolis, Delphi and Olympia
Imperial Rome with the Colisseum, forum, Pompei and sunken city of Baiae.

Week 3 - Ancient Asia:

Ajanta caves and temple of Mahabalipuram India
Buddhist temples in Bagan, Burma, Boroburdur, Indonesia,Ayutthya, Thailand, Angkor Wat
Great wall of China and Entombed warriors of Xian
Potala palace Tibet and Golden temple Japan

Week 4 – Americas/Pacific:

  • Mounds and cave dwellings in USA
  • Teotihucan in Mexico
  • Mayan cities of Chitzen Itza and Tulum
  • Easter Island
  • Ponape
