Portrait Photography

This course is suitable for any student who wants to learn the fundamental principles of portraiture from a professional photographer with over 25 years' experience in press photography. This comprehensive course covers lighting both outdoors and indoors, using natural night, flash, softeners and reflectors, working with subject’s, portrait techniques and camera set up.


  • Week 1 Portraiture outdoors – working with the light Interpreting light Natural lighting Natural light and using a reflector Fill flash and overriding natural night with flash Working in the shadows
  • Week 2 Portraiture indoors – controlling the light Window lighting Lighting with flash Multiple flash Softening and bouncing flash Advanced study of the masters of portraiture.

Skill Level:

  • Anyone whom has a thorough working knowledge of their camera; aperture, shutter speeds, focusing and the basic principals of photography, or whom has done the following;
  • A Beginner’s Photography course or similar
  • A Basic DSLR / Digital Photography course or similar.

Essential Materials:

  • Any adjustable digital DSLR, 4/3rds, mirrorless with RAW/JPEG image capability, adjustable ISO/film speed settings and adjustable exposure settings; shutter, aperture and manual exposure ie S or TV, A or AV and M also if your camera has adjustable picture style settings ie monochrome, standard, neutral etc
  • A standard and or telephoto lens or a zoom lens with standard to telephoto range

Additional items:

  • 5 in one reflector
  • An extra battery and flash card, as you will be your using your camera, and reviewing your photographs frequently
  • Tripod or monopod with electronic cable release would also be of great benefit
  • Off camera flash with cord and/or transmitter
  • Note pad and pen

Other Information:

  • To ensure resources are ready for you at the start of your course, we ask you ideally enrol at least one week before the course commences.
  • All courses need a minimum number of students to run ("we try our hardest to get those") . If your course does not have enough students it will be cancelled prior to the commencement and you will be informed.
