Poetry Writing

Let your creativity loose with this poetry writing course. We will look at different types of poem structures, both formal and informal. We’ll examine important poetry writing techniques and discuss how to find and pursue your inspiration. There will be an opportunity to workshop your writing in class.

Course outline:

Week 1: Poetry as a craft – types of poems, poetic techniques, seeking inspiration, practical activities.
Week 2: Poetry as an art – the purpose of poetry, expressing the truth as you see it, finding your own voice and style. Poems written by participants will be workshopped and class feedback will be provided.

About the Tutor:

"My workshops differ from most writing classes as I don’t just teach you how to write, I also like to explain what comes next... Which publisher should you approach? How do you go about it? What happens when you’re offered a contract?

As an author of more than 40 books, and having written for both adults and young people, I have also been running classes at SGSCC for over 7 years. More recently I have also written a new 10-book children’s fiction series – Hopeless Heroes – a humorous take on Greek mythology, and book 1 “Tim Baker and the Ancient Curse” was recently launched in London."
