In this comprehensive field trip to be held at the Sydney Vintage Tramway Festival at the Sydney Tramway Museum, Loftus, you will learn how to see in Black and White and Colour and also learn in depth about composition, interpreting the light and previsualisation – thinking before you press the shutter button. This is a great opportunity to hone your photographic skills, and take your photography to another level. This field trip includes a de-brief, and open chat session, relating to anything about photography technique and or equipment.

Field Trip Outcome:

You will learn

  • Proper camera set up for Colour and Black and White (monochrome) Photography
  • Learn how to see in Black and White and Colour
  • How to use filters properly for Black and White (monochrome) and Colour Photography
  • Learn advanced principals and techniques of photography including; depth of field, composition, point of view POV, object isolation and interpreting the light.
  • Previsualisation – thinking before you press the shutter button

Skill Level:

This field trip is suitable for students who have a thorough working knowledge of their camera and controls, shutter and aperture settings and or have completed either a;

  • Beginner’s Photography Course or similar
  • Basic DSLR / Digital Photography Course or similar
  • Intermediate Photography Course or similar
  • Landscape Photography Course

Field Trip Outline:

  • Proper camera set up for Colour and Black and White (monochrome) Photography
  • Learn how to see in Black and White and Colour
  • How to use filters properly for Black and White (monochrome) and Colour Photography
  • How to focus and recompose correctly
  • Point Of View (POV)
  • Subject to background distance
  • Composition and Negative space
  • Object isolation
  • A ‘mystery’ composition module
  • Previsualization
  • How to interpret light

Essential Materials:

Camera Equipment for this field trip

  • Any adjustable digital DSLR / 4/3rds / Mirrorless camera with RAW / JPEG image capability, adjustable ISO / film speed settings and adjustable exposure settings; shutter, aperture and manual exposure i.e. S or TV, A or AV and M
  • If you have any zoom lens(es) i.e. 16 – 35mm / 10 – 20 mm / 18 – 55mm / 18 – 135 mm / 70 -200 mm etc
  • Wide, standard or telephoto lens(es) and or zooms(s) and or len(es) with a fast aperture of f1.4 / f2.0 / f4.0 etc, please bring them along too
  • An extra battery and flash card, as you will be your using your camera, and reviewing your photographs frequently
  • A set of slip in graduated neutral density filters
  • A circular polarizing filter CP-L
  • A sturdy tripod and or monopod (as we are walking most of the field trip a monopod is recommended).

Additional items:

Weatherproof clothing / clothing for warmer or cool weather

  • Cool / wet weather warm clothing / jumper, mini umbrella or light rain jacket
  • Warmer weather – comfortable clothing, hat and sunglasses
  • Closed in footwear for your safety, as we will be doing some practical lessons outside the classroom as well as for field trips acceptable; closed walking / running shoes / hiking boots with rubber soles (no thongs / sandals / high heels etc)
  • Own food, snacks and water
  • Note pad and pen
  • Please note there is a kiosk which sells; drinks, pies, snacks, ice creams etc

Please note:

  • This field trip will run regardless of the weather to give participants an opportunity to photograph in fine or wet weather

Safety note:

  • Students are to follow instructions of the Tutor and or Tram drivers / Safety Marshalls / Tramway Marshalls / Conductors at all times for their safety, tripods may only be used under the Tutor’s supervision away from public thoroughfares, students are to keep their camera bags / packs with them at all times.

Getting there:

By train; the Sydney Tramway Museum is next to Loftus station, the main entrance is a 75 x metre walk from the station.

Parking:

Parking is available on street

Some off street in the TAFE grounds next door, *please note opening hours of this car park varies (on street parking is advisable).

About the Tutor:

'My name is Neoklis Bloukos, and I have had a passion for Photography since I was 14 years old. I have 40+ years of experience teaching all levels of Photography.

I am very passionate about Photography, and I love to teach and share, my knowledge and practice of both classic and modern; Photography genres and techniques in the field, and I believe it is the most significant visual medium on this planet.

It is not just about teaching Photography, it is also about experiences with like-minded people, whom want to learn, share and enjoy the Photography learning experience together, in a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere.'

  • To ensure resources are ready for you at the start of your course, we ask you ideally enrol at least one week before the course commences.
