Photography - Surfing Action - Wanda - Cronulla

Overlooking a beautiful beach of the Cronulla surfing district, you will learn detailed photography principles to master the art of action photography. You will be guided in a detailed and set up of your camera including; motordrive, focussing properly, correct shutter speeds, capturing ‘the moment’, freezing and intentional movement blur.This is a great opportunity to hone your photographic skills, and take your photography to another level. This field trip includes a de-brief, and open chat session, relating to anything about photography technique and or equipment.

Field Trip Outcome:

You will learn:

  • How to master the art of action photography.
  • Proper action camera set up including; focusing setup, exposure, shutter speed setting and motordrive setup
  • How to capture the 'moment'
  • Techniques of freezing and intentional movement blur
  • How to focus correctly and getting it sharp

  • Reviewing your photographs properly

Skill Level:

This field trip is suitable for students who have a thorough working knowledge of their camera and controls, shutter and aperture settings and or have completed either a;

  • Beginner’s Photography Course or similar
  • Basic DSLR / Digital Photography Course or similar
  • Intermediate Photography Course
  • Landscape Photography Course

Essential Materials:

Camera Equipment for this field trip

*Any adjustable digital DSLR / 4/3rds / Mirrorless camera with RAW / JPEG image capability, adjustable ISO / film speed settings and adjustable exposure settings; shutter, aperture and manual exposure i.e. S or TV, A or AV and M

  • If you have any zoom telephoto lens(es); i.e. 70 – 200 MM , 100 – 400 MM , 70 – 300 MM etc
  • Telephoto to Super telephoto lens(es) ie 135 MM, 200 MM, 400 MM+ if you have them
  • A teleconvertor 1.4x or 2x etc, if you have one for extra reach.
  • Any wide to telephoto prime lens(es) / zoom(s) and or len(es) i.e. 16 – 35mm / 10 – 20 mm / 18 – 55 MM / 18 – 135 MM , 24 MM , 35 MM, 50 MM, 85MM etc
  • If you have a set of slip in graduated neutral density filters and or a circular polarizing filter please bring them along them too
  • A plastic camera cover for your camera and lens, microfiber lens cloth
  • A monopod is strong recommended, otherwise a tripod
  • A portable lightweight chair as we be in one location for some time

Please note:

  • At least one extra battery and at least one extra large capacity flash card, are strongly recommended as you will be your using your camera, on higher burst rate, focusing etc, taking more photographs than usual and reviewing your photographs frequently.
  • The tutor will bring one 70 – 200 MM zoom lens and a teleconvertor for students to share, please note a blank SD memory card is required, so you can record your photographs onto your own memory card.

Additional items:

Weatherproof clothing / clothing for warmer or cool weather

  • Cool / wet weather warm clothing / jumper, mini umbrella or light rain jacket
  • Warmer weather – comfortable clothing, hat and sunglasses
  • Closed in footwear for your safety, as we will be doing some practical lessons outside the classroom as well as for field trips acceptable; closed walking / running shoes / hiking boots with rubber soles (no thongs / sandals / high heels etc)
  • Own food, snacks and water
  • Note pad and pen
  • A towel for yourself and your camera

With over 44 years of experience with camera equipment, 25 years as a Press Photographer and 15 years of digital post processing, I am now a Professional Photography Tutor, teaching Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced photography at SGSCC. I am passionate about photography and love to teach and share both classic and modern photography techniques, and believe it is the most significant visual medium on this planet.
