In this comprehensive field trip, you will learn in detail about how to interpret light and take photographs in various light conditions including; afternoon, sunset, golden hour, twilight and night. You also will learn about Night Photography including; correct set up including; Image size, Colour Space AGRB / SRGB, Picture settings, ISO (film speed), iso noise reduction and long exposure noise reduction, white balance, correct tripod and cable set up, manual and auto exposure; time / long exposures, previsualization, composition, depth of field, time / long exposures in both auto and manual exposure modes and special effects including; Zoom effects – zoom, twist and zoom effect, panning and rotation effects and the Bokeh effect; how to create magical bokeh photographs – otherwise known as intentional blur. Learn from a Professional Photography Tutor with over 44 years of Photography experience, in a relaxed but informative atmosphere.

This field trip includes a de-brief, and open chat session, relating to anything about photography technique and or equipment.

Field Trip Outcome: What you will learn:

Comprehensive Camera set up
Setting up your camera properly including;

Comprehensive Photography Tuition including;

  • High key and low key lighting
  • Previsualization, composition, and depth of field – DOF
  • You will learn interpret and photograph in various light conditions including; afternoon, magic hour, sunset, twilight and night
  • Focusing in low light
  • Correct tripod and cable set up, time / long exposures in both auto and manual exposure modes
  • How to increase the exposure time using neutral density filters
  • Zoom effect, twist and zoom effect

•Panning and rotation effect
•Bokeh effect; how to create magical bokeh photographs – otherwise known as intentional blur

Skill Level:

This field trip is suitable for students who have a thorough working knowledge of their camera and controls, shutter and aperture settings and or have completed either a;

  • Beginner’s Photography Course or similar
  • Basic DSLR / Digital Photography Course or similar
  • Intermediate Photography Course or similar
  • Landscape Photography Course or similar

What to bring:

Camera Equipment;

Any adjustable digital camera; DSLR / 4/3rds / Mirrorless with;

  • RAW / JPEG image capability
  • adjustable ISO / film speed settings
  • with adjustable exposure settings; shutter, aperture and manual exposure i.e. S or TV, A or AV and M,
  • with manual / auto focus capability
  • also if your camera has adjustable picture control / picture style settings i.e. monochrome standard, neutral etc
  • A spare camera body if you have one
  • Batterie(s) charged and ready x 2 if you have them
  • Memory card(s) x 2 if you have them

An extra battery and memory card, are strongly recommended, as you will be your using your camera, doing time exposures and you will be reviewing your photographs frequently

Zoom lens(es)
18 – 55 mm , 18 – 135 mm , 16 – 35mm , 28 to 80 mm, 10 – 20mm , 40 – 150mm , 70 – 200 etc
and or
Prime lens(es) if you have them i.e. fisheye, 15mm , 20 mm , 35 mm , 50 mm , 85mm / 135mm

Lens notes;

  • any lens with a fast aperture of f1.4 / f1.8 / f2.0 / f2.8 / f4.0 etc will be very useful night time photography
  • to do some effects photography a lens with manual focus

(usually a switch on the lens or camera) is necessary

  • to do zoom effects, a zoom lens is necessary

Some night photography is done at close quarters + so make sure you also bring your widest zoom lens and or widest wide angle prime lens or +fisheye lens.
+ i use a 15mm fisheye to capture photographs of rides at closer range

Filters; if you have these filters, please bring them along too
Solid Neutral Density filter either; 1, 2, 3 or 5 x stop for longer exposures
A circular polarizer known as a CPL

  • always ask for filters by the stop factor

Tripod gear:

  • A sturdy tripod
  • Tripod plate and spare plate if you have one
  • Tripod head / tripod ball head
  • A connected electronic cable release for your camera, as timing is crucial
  • A spare connected electronic cable release or remote release if you have one

Please note a sturdy tripod and tripod / tripod ball head and an electronic connected cable release (is essential as timing is crucial), Releasing with the delayed timer on your camera or button remote is not recommended.

What to wear:

As we will be outdoors these additional items and clothing are strongly recommended;

  • Wet weather – Weatherproof clothing, (weather-proof footwear is advisable), mini umbrella - *no large umbrellas for safety purposes
  • Cool weather – Warm clothing / jumper / jacket / beanie etc
  • Warmer weather – comfortable clothing, hat and sunglasses

Footwear:

  • Closed in footwear for your safety, acceptable; closed walking / running shoes / hiking boots with rubber soles (NO thongs / sandals / high heels etc)

Additional items:

  • An LED torch (smartphone torches are not recommended),
  • Note pad and pen
  • Water, food, snacks
  • Money – cash is preferable for coffee / snacks / dessert / supper (no split bills

Weather:

This field trip will run regardless of the weather to give participants an opportunity to photograph in fine or wet weather

Special notes:
Special Luna Park conditions;
Special Permission has been granted for this Photography field trip to run, only photographs including general views of Luna Park, night photography are permitted, but close-ups or specific photographs of employees, attendees and or their children / families is not permitted within the grounds; prior to, during and after this field trip whatsoever.
Taking video or using a tripod within the Luna park grounds is not permitted
Photos taken inside Luna Park cannot be used for commercial purposes

Safety Note;
Tripods can only be used outside of Luna Park with the Tutor’s supervision, and away from public thoroughfares.

Please note;
Coffee / drinks / food / carnival rides, transport to and from Luna Park and any other expenses are not included in cost of field trip.

Meet the Tutor at 4 pm at Luna Park 1 Olympic Drive, Milsons Point at the Luna Park mouth entrance, which is at the harbour end of Olympic Drive, Milsons Point

The closest railway station is Milsons Point then approx 10 -15 minutes walk to Luna Park.

if you are driving Please allow enough time to get a parking spot,

Parking options Lavender Bay
Some non metered parking is available in some areas of Lavender Bay
after 6 pm (please note they are metered at 1 x hour up to 6pm)
depending on the demand on the day.

Milsons Point metered parking approx $20 – 30 for 4 hours
Northcliffe St, Dind St, Glen St, Fitzroy St

  • All these areas are monitored on nights and weekends*

Please note; If possible please avoid Alfred St south, as it is the highest rate of metered parking.

Parking inside Luna Park is available; Entry to the car park is via Paul Street, just off Alfred St South, Milsons Point.
