Photography in the Field - Sydney Harbour Walk

Course Outline:

In this comprehensive field trip at the Sydney Harbour Bridge, set against Sydney Harbour, you will learn in depth about photography techniques, from a tutor with over 42 years of photography experience in a relaxed but informative atmosphere.

This field trip concludes with a de-brief and open chat session relating to anything about photography technique and or equipment, in a local cafe in the Rocks District. (Any food/drink will be own cost)


What you will learn:

  • Storytelling with Photography
  • Set up
  • Framing and how to crop for Panoramic Aspect
  • Point Of View POV, Composition and Negative space
  • Pre visualization
  • How to interpret light
  • Bokeh – intentional blur
  • Last hour de-brief and open chat session relating to anything about photography technique and or equipment

Skill Level:

This Field trip is suitable for students who have a thorough working knowledge of their camera and controls, shutter and aperture settings and or have completed a beginners and or intermediate photography/DSLR photography course or similar.

Essential Materials:

Camera Equipment:

  • Any adjustable digital DSLR, 4/3rds, MIRRORLESS with RAW / JPEG image capability, adjustable ISO / film speed settings and adjustable exposure settings; shutter, aperture and manual exposure ie S or TV, A or AV and M
  • If you have any zoom lens(es) i.e. 16 – 35mm / 10 – 20 mm / 18 – 55mm / 18 – 135 mm
  • Any wide to telephoto prime lens(es) / zoom(s) and or len(es) with a fast aperture of f1.4 / f2.0 / f4.0 etc please bring them along too.
  • An extra battery and flash card, as you will be your using your camera, and reviewing your photographs frequently
  • If you have a set of slip in graduated neutral density filters and/or screw in solid neutral density filter(s) 3, 6 or 10 stop and or a circular polarizing filter bring them along them too.
  • A small table top tripod is allowable

Note: NO Tripods are allowed for this field trip for safety reasons.

Additional items:

  • Weatherproof clothing – warm clothing/jumper, mini umbrella or light rain jacket, etc
  • Own food and water
  • Note pad and pen
  • Closed in footwear


This field trip will be held in wet or dry weather as it can give students an opportunity to capture photographs that are not normally available in fine weather.

  • Harbour Bridge stairs, Cumberland St, near the corner of Argyle Street, The Rocks
  • Your tutor will holding a red covered tablet
