Photography in the Field - Surfing Action, Cronulla

Course Outline:

Overlooking the beautiful beaches of the Cronulla surfing district, you will learn detailed photography principles to master the art of taking “Action” photography. With over 25 years' experience in Action Photography your Tutor will guide you through from beginning to end! You will be amazed at what you can achieve in one 5 hours Field Trip to the beach! This field trip will conclude with a de-brief and open chat session relating to anything about photography technique and or equipment.

  • Focusing correctly and getting it sharp
  • Exposure / Shutter settings
  • Motordrive setup
  • Composition
  • Capturing the 'moment'
  • Freezing and intentional blur
  • Reviewing

Skill Level:

This Field trip is suitable for students who have a thorough working knowledge of their camera and controls, shutter and aperture settings and or have completed a beginners and or intermediate photography/DSLR photography course or similar.

Essential Materials:

Camera Equipment:

  • Any adjustable digital DSLR, 4/3rds, MIRRORLESS with RAW / JPEG image capability, adjustable ISO / film speed settings and adjustable exposure settings; shutter, aperture and manual exposure ie S or TV, A or AV and M
  • If you have any zoom telephoto lens(es) ; i.e. 70 – 200 MM , 100 – 400 MM , 70 – 300 MM etc
  • Telephoto to Super telephoto lens(es) ie 135 MM, 200 MM, 400 MM+ if you have them
  • A teleconvertor 1.4x or 2x etc, if you have one for extra reach.
  • Any wide to telephoto prime lens(es) / zoom(s) and or len(es) i.e. 16 – 35mm / 10 – 20 mm / 18 – 55 MM / 18 – 135 MM , 24 MM , 35 MM, 50 MM, 85MM etc
  • At least one extra battery and at least one extra large capacity flash card, as you will be your using your camera, on higher burst rate, focusing etc, taking more photographs than usual and reviewing your photographs frequently
  • If you have a set of slip in graduated neutral density filters and or a circular polarizing filter bring them along them too
  • A plastic camera cover for your camera and lens, microfiber lens cloth.

The tutor will bring one 70 – 200 MM zoom lens and a teleconvertor in the Canon EF format for students to share.

Additional items:

  • Tripod and/or monopod is strongly recommended for this field trip
  • Hat, sunscreen, weatherproof clothing
  • A towel for yourself and your camera
  • Own food and water
  • Note pad and pen
  • Closed in footwear


This field trip will be held in wet or dry weather as it can give students an opportunity to capture photographs that are not normally available in fine weather.

The exact location to meet for this Field Trip will be advised prior to the day and will depend on Surf Conditions and weather expected on the day.
