Photography in the Field - Japanese Gardens, Auburn

In the magnificent Japanese Gardens of Auburn you will learn the core principles of landscape photography in black & white and colour. Exposure, composition, negative space and depth of field will all be taught, as well as how to think and previsualize before actually taking a photograph.

Course Outline:

  • How to interpret the light and how to expose and bracket and interpret your exposures correctly for digital post processing.
  • Methods of Landscape photography in both black and white and colour using filtration – how to correctly install and use filters; both neutral density and polarizing as well as picture styles.
  • Essentials of Landscape Photography; Previsualization, composition, framing, thirds, negative space and depth of field.
  • Advanced camera set up
  • Debrief in a local cafe; assessment of student photos with a question and answer session about photography theory and or equipment. (food/drink purchased at own expense)

Skill Level:

  • Anyone whom has a thorough working knowledge of their camera; aperture, shutter speeds, focusing and the basic principals of photography, or whom has done the following;
  • A Beginner’s Photography course or similar.
  • A Beginner’s Photography course – Intensive or similar.
  • A Basic DSLR / Digital Photography course or similar.

Essential Materials:

  • Any adjustable digital DSLR, 4/3rds, mirrorless with RAW / JPEG image capability, adjustable ISO / film speed settings and adjustable exposure settings; shutter, aperture and manual exposure ie S or TV, A or AV and M
  • Wide to telephoto lens(es) / zoom(s) and or len(es) with a fast aperture of f1.4 / f2.0 / f4.0 etc
  • An extra battery and flash card, as you will be your using your camera, and reviewing your photographs frequently
  • A set of slip in graduated neutral density filters and/or screw in solid neutral density filter; 1, 2 or 3 x stop and or a circular polarizing filter
  • Please note: Tripods are not allowed to be used for safety reasons.

Additional items:

  • Weatherproof clothing – warm clothing/jumper, mini umbrella or light rain jacket, etc (this field trip will be held in wet weather
  • Closed in footwear – walking/running shoes etc with rubber soles.
  • Own food and water
  • Note pad and pen

Location to Meet:

We will meet at the entrance of the Japanese Gardens. Tutor will be holding a red covered tablet pad.
