Patchwork (Hand Sewing) Beginners

This practical patchwork course covers quilt construction (by hand sewing) from planning to completing. You will learn all you need to know to make your own handsewn quilts. Learn how to plan, draft, construct, assemble, hand quilt and bind it. These techniques can then be applied to make a variety of other quilts. The four different types of blocks made in the course are the basis of a huge variety of other blocks that can be made by the same techniques. You can have your own handmade quilt by the end of the course and the experience to design and make all manner of other quilts.

Course Outline:

  • Choosing fabrics and useful tools.
  • Drafting and sewing a nine-patch block
  • Drafting and sewing a hexagon flower block by English paper piecing
  • Planning and sewing applique
  • Drafting and sewing an eight-point start block
  • Connecting blocks with sashing and bordering them
  • Assembling a quilt in three layers of top, batting and backing
  • Hand quilting to join the layers together
  • Binding and finishing a quilt

  • Theory of fabric selection
  • Choosing the right tools
  • Constructing four different types of quilt blocks and how to plan variations
  • Assembling blocks to make a quilt top using sashing and borders
  • Sandwiching a quilt with batting and backing.
  • Hand quilting techniques and design choices
  • How to bind and finish and care for a quilt

What to bring:

  • For the first class notepaper and pen. Comprehensive notes will be provided
  • In the first class information will be given on how to select fabric and useful tools that will be needed for the course. These will need to be purchased for the second class.
  • They will include: a quilters ruler, cutting board and rotary cutter; pencil, graph paper, ruler; template plastic, permanent marker, general-purpose scissors; fabric scissors, needles, pins, sewing thread, thimble
  • For the last two classes batting and handquilting thread will be needed.

There are four shops in the St George and Sutherland areas that specialise in quilting fabric and supplies as well as two chain stores that carry many of the required supplies.

Marilyn Lowder has been a keen quilter for twenty years and is an accredited teacher of beginner patchwork with the NSW Quilters Guild. She has also been a school and Tafe teacher. She is passionate about quilt making and enjoys sharing all she knows about it. She has won awards for her quilts in local and state shows.
