Painting an Ocean Scene with Acrylics

Using a selected palette of acrylic paints, participants will begin by working from a supplied handout of a particular water scene of the beautiful beach suburb of Bundeena. Using this handout and following your tutor Sonja Karl step by step, students will work systematically through the landscape using specific colours and brush applications. Working the painting up in layers and in a ‘painterly’ technique to finally apply detail. Your tutor will be at hand to help throughout your painting process.

Course Outline:

Overall students will

  • Transfer image onto canvas using a limited graph.
  • Work up the painting using layers while applying a painterly brush technique in sections of the painting
  • Follow step by step colour mixing and application from the Tutor
  • Have instruction from your tutor throughout
  • Finalise your painting with limited detail.

Learning Outcomes:

Students will gain:

  • an understanding of colour mixing and application of acrylic paint
  • an awareness of colour perspective
  • a knowledge of composition and depth
  • confidence in the use of acrylic mediums
  • Flexibility in the application of brushwork

What to bring:

  • A stretched canvas approximately A3 size or larger
  • Acrylic Paints – Burnt Umber, Ultramarine Blue, Alizarine Crimson, Pthalo Blue, Yellow Oxide, Raw Umber, Dioxazine Purple, Napthol Red, Pthalo Turquoise and White.
  • A selection of sizes of hog hair and synthetic brushes
  • Flow or Retarder Medium
  • An apron or old shirt
