Night Videography at Vivid

In this comprehensive video field trip using Vivid 2018 as your canvas, learn storytelling through videography, learn to set up your DSLR / MIRRORLESS video camera, and learn the fundamental principles, techniques & theory of videography. This is a great opportunity to learn videography; using proven cinematic techniques from a Tutor with experience in short film and video editing. This field trip will be run in a relaxed but informative atmosphere.

Agenda:

You will learn;

  • Storytelling through Videography
  • Pre visualization
  • Shot (filmmaking); wide, long, medium, close up etc
  • Camera Movement Techniques
  • Camera angle / Point Of View POV
  • Framing and how to crop for Panoramic Aspect (depending on your camera)
  • Composition
  • How to interpret light
  • Set up; image resolution size – Standard definition SD / High Definition HD
  • shutter / frame rate / aperture / picture style
  • Focusing manually and Bokeh – intentional blur
  • Field trip – debrief / chat session on anything relating to videography technique and related lenses / equipment in a local coffee shop in the Rocks district.

Skill Level

  • This field trip is suitable for students who have a thorough working knowledge of their camera and controls, video controls and set up/ shutter and aperture settings and or have completed a beginners and or intermediate photography / DSLR photography course or similar and or a video beginners or similar and or intermediate video course or similar.

Essential Materials:

Camera Equipment for this field trip

  • A tripod / monopod is recommended for this field trip with a standard 3 way / ball-head or fluid head if you have one
  • Any adjustable digital DSLR or 4/3rds or MIRRORLESS camera with VIDEO capability, adjustable ISO / film speed settings, adjustable exposure settings; shutter, aperture and manual exposure adjustment i.e. S or TV, A or AV and M exposure modes with manual focus capability.

Recommended; At least one prime or zoom lens with manual focus capability;

  • If you have any zoom lens(es) i.e. 16 – 35mm / 10 – 20 mm / 18 – 55mm / 18 – 135 mm * •wide to telephoto prime lens(es) / zoom(s) and or len(es) ie 24 mm , 35 mm , 50 mm , 135 mm etc with a fast aperture of f1.4 / f2.0 / f4.0 etc please bring them along too.
  • A large capacity flash card i.e. 8x GB and above – To record High Definition you will need a card that meets 1 of the 3 requirements below;
  • Record more than 6 mb/s or more – 10 mb/s is recommended
  • Has rating of U1 or above – U3 is recommended
  • Class 8 or above – C10 is recommended
  • An extra battery as you will be your using your camera, and reviewing your video frequently – Please make sure you have fully charged/ recharged all your batteries wether they are charged or not as they lose power over time when not being used.

Additional items:

  • Weatherproof clothing – warm clothing/jumper, mini umbrella and rain jacket, etc
  • Own snacks/food and water
  • Note pad and pen
  • Footwear

Please note; as there are some uneven and loose surfaces, to participate you must wear enclosed footwear only, no open footwear i.e. sandals can be worn for this field trip. For safety purposes acceptable footwear is as follows; walking shoes, running shoes, bush walking shoes or hiking boots, (weather-proof footwear is advisable).

Weather:

This field trip will be held in fine or wet weather, as it can give students an opportunity to capture video, that is not normally available in fine weather.

Location to Meet:

Meet at 6.55pm for a 7pm start at the entrance of Wharf 6, Circular Quay (closest to the Museum of Contemporary Art).

1) Please allow enough time to get a parking spot,
most locations in the city are metered.
2) I do not recommend parking on street.
