Night Photography and Photography Effects Vivid Sydney

Vivid Sydney is a unique annual event of light and music. During this field trip you will be given an opportunity to learn Night Photography within the Circular Quay and The Rocks District, at approximately 5 or 6 of the Vivid exhibits, depending on student numbers - (maximum of 6 x students), set up time and tuition at each exhibit.

In this comprehensive field trip, you will learn in detail about Night Photography including; correct set up, using a tripod properly, interpreting light, manual and auto exposure, time / long exposures, previsualization, composition, depth of field, correct tripod and cable set up, time / long exposures in both auto and manual exposure modes and special effects including; Zoom effects – zoom, twist and zoom effect, panning and rotation effects and the Bokeh effect; how to create magical bokeh photographs – otherwise known as intentional blur.

This field trip includes a de-brief, and open chat session, relating to anything about photography technique and or equipment at a local Rocks Cafe. Learn from a Professional Photography Tutor with over 44 years of Photography experience, in a relaxed but informative atmosphere.

Field Trip Outcome: What you will learn:

Comprehensive Camera set up
Setting up your camera properly including;

  • Image settings large fine JPEG and or RAW
  • ISO Film speed
  • Light meter settings
  • Colour Space settings; ARGB or SRGB
  • White Balance
  • Picture Control / Picture styles
  • Noise reduction

Comprehensive Photography Tuition including;

  • High key and low key lighting
  • Previsualization, composition, and depth of field – DOF
  • You will learn interpret and photograph in various light conditions including; afternoon, magic hour, sunset, twilight and night
  • Focusing in low light
  • Correct tripod and cable set up, time / long exposures in both auto and manual exposure modes
  • Zoom effects – zoom, twist and zoom effect
  • Panning and rotation effects
  • Bokeh effect; how to create magical bokeh photographs – otherwise known as intentional blur

Skill Level:

This field trip is suitable for students who have a thorough working knowledge of their camera and controls, shutter and aperture settings and or have completed either a;

  • Beginner’s Photography Course or similar
  • Basic DSLR / Digital Photography Course or similar
  • Intermediate Photography Course or similar
  • Landscape Photography Course or similar

What to bring:

Camera Equipment;

Any adjustable digital camera; DSLR / 4/3rds / Mirrorless with;

  • RAW / JPEG image capability
  • adjustable ISO / film speed settings
  • with adjustable exposure settings; shutter, aperture and manual exposure i.e. S or TV, A or AV and M,
  • with manual / auto focus capability
  • also if your camera has adjustable picture control / picture style settings i.e. monochrome standard, neutral etc
  • A spare camera body if you have one
  • Batterie(s) charged and ready x 2 if you have them
  • Memory card(s) x 2 if you have them

An extra battery and memory card, are strongly recommended, as you will be your using your camera, doing time exposures and reviewing your photographs frequently.

Zoom lens(es)
18 – 55 mm , 18 – 135 mm , 16 – 35mm , 28 to 80 mm, 10 – 20mm , 40 – 150mm , 70 – 200 etc
and or
Prime lens(es) if you have them i.e. fisheye, 15mm , 20 mm , 35 mm , 50 mm , 85mm / 135mm

Lens notes;

  • any lens with a fast aperture of f1.4 / f1.8 / f2.0 / f2.8 / f4.0 etc will be very useful night time photography
  • to do some effects photography a lens with manual focus

(usually a switch on the lens or camera) is necessary

  • to do zoom effects, a zoom lens is necessary

A lot of photography is done at close quarters so make sure you bring your widest zoom lens and or widest wide angle prime lens or +fisheye lens.
+ i use a 15mm fisheye to capture Vivid exhibits at close range

  • A Tripod – matching tripod plate and a camera cable release are necessary (*a cable release is essential, as timing is crucial, as releasing with the delayed timer on your camera is not recommended).

Please note; an extra battery and flash card are strongly advisable as you will be your using your camera for long exposures, and reviewing your photographs frequently, during this field trip.

What to wear:

As we will be outdoors these additional items and clothing are strongly recommended

  • Wet weather – Weatherproof clothing, (weather-proof footwear is advisable), mini umbrella - *no large umbrellas for safety purposes
  • Cool weather – Warm clothing / jumper / jacket / beanie etc
  • Warmer weather – comfortable clothing, hat and sunglasses

Footwear:

  • Closed in footwear for your safety, acceptable; closed walking / running shoes / hiking boots with rubber soles (NO thongs / sandals / high heels etc)

Additional items:

  • An LED torch (smartphone torches are not recommended),
  • Note pad and pen
  • Water, food, snacks
  • Money – cash is preferable for coffee / snacks / dessert / supper (no split bills)

Weather:

This field trip will run regardless of the weather to give participants an opportunity to photograph in fine or wet weather

Special notes:

Only photographs including general views of exhibits are allowed, but close-ups or specific photographs of parents and or their children / families are not permitted

Safety Note; Tripods can only be used with the Tutor’s supervision, and away from public thoroughfares

Please note; coffee / drinks / food / dinner / snacks /etc, transport to and from Vivid and any other expenses are not included in cost of field trip.
