Loose Watercolour Flowers
Get creative and join us at SGSCC for this special art class! Use wet-in-wet techniques to create 3 loose watercolour flower paintings. We’ll start with a discussion about simplifying shapes and the importance of a good composition. Our focus will be on letting loose and embracing the process of feeling free to create loose watercolour flowers. You will learn tips and tricks and learn how to make a beautiful flower watercolour painting yourself by using different techniques, colour and the characteristics that watercolour painting holds to create a unique composition.

Course Outline:

  • Introduction to flowers and their varied shapes
  • How to compose your flower painting
  • How to create transparent layers of watercolour
  • Technique studies including washes, wet-in-wet, layering, splattering and spraying

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand wet-in-wet watercolour application
  • Understand wet-on-dry watercolour application
  • Obtain knowledge of the many ways to compose a painting
  • Obtain confidence in colour mixing
  • Learn the value of a limited palette
  • Learn the value of quality watercolour paper and paint

What to bring:

  • Watercolour tubes: Ultramarine blue, Permanent rose, Cadmium yellow, Cobalt Turquoise and white gouache (or bring minimum of blue, red and yellow tubes of artist quality watercolour paint). Optional extra tubes include: Magenta, Viridian, Cascade Green, Winsor Blue or Phthalo blue or Ultramarine blue
  • Watercolour brushes: 2 medium round brushes with a good point, small liner brush (or rigger or small dagger brush), medium hake brush.
  • 5 sheets A4 watercolour paper, or 4 sheets A3/quarter sheets – must be quality paper such as Arches or Saunders Waterford. Separate sheet of watercolour paper for testing your colours. Marion uses 300 gsm Saunders Waterford rough watercolour sheets.
  • Boards larger than your paper, HB pencil, eraser, masking tape, watercolour palette, spray bottle, old towel for the table, tissues, masking fluid + old brush/applicator, 2 water containers
  • Water soluble marker
  • Metre length of fine cotton

  • To ensure resources are ready for you at the start of your course, we ask you ideally enrol at least one week before the course commences.
  • All courses need a minimum number of students to run ("we try our hardest to get those") . If your course does not have enough students it will be cancelled prior to the commencement and you will be informed.
