I Can Draw Anything

This one-day workshop will lead you step-by-step through the essential processes needed to draw objects accurately from life. Through a series of still life exercises you will learn how to depict symmetrical objects, architectural forms, organic forms, and the transforming effect of light and shadow. You will learn how to frame a composition, find correct proportions within an object and apply this consistently across the setting. The principles of linear perspective will be explained and applied to make convincing forms, and cross-contour hatching used to define irregular organic surfaces. Through the versatile medium of willow charcoal you will model the effects of light and shadow and discover how tone can bring mood and drama to your drawing. Design strategies will be discussed along with the intelligent use of negative space in generating tension and balance in your composition.

'Kevin McKay is an urban landscape painter who holds a Masters Degree in Fine Art from the National Art School, exhibits at May Space Gallery, Sydney and works from his Sutherland studio. Plein air studies inform his studio paintings, which typically depict eerily empty architectural spaces, where the stillness of classical form and the drama of light is found in the everyday and in the midst of urban transience. Kevin has won many awards and has been teaching for 10 years, with SSGCC. He has also taught at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney Grammar School, Hazelhurst, Waverley Woollahra Art School and the National Art School.'
