Guitar - Beginners

Did you always want to take guitar lessons? Learn how to play the guitar at SGSCC. This Guitar class for Beginners is designed for those who have never played guitar before and will give you step by step instructions. Learn how to play the guitar in a relaxed fun atmosphere. The attentive tutor will put you at ease to reach your learning goals without the fear of not having much formal music knowledge. It is also ideal for those returning after a long break to revisit the basics and build a solid foundation from which you can grow your musical journey. Learning to play by using a combination of riffs and songs gives you skills you can enjoy yourself, share with others and also gives your learning a fun easy feel that encourages practice and mastery of new skills.

Course Outline:

  • Investigate various methods and styles for playing guitar
  • Learn tuning methods
  • Learn basic chords
  • Learn how to read TAB and chord blocks and their uses
  • Learn rhythm and how to develop strumming and rhythm patterns used in popular songs
  • Focus songs help you examine song structure and function
  • Concert night lets you showcase learning or anything that has inspired your learning as well as giving your tutor a chance to showcase popular music that utilizes what you have learned during the term.

(Performing at concert night is completely VOLUNTARY)

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Tune your guitar
  • Read and utilize TAB
  • Understand, interpret and use chord diagrams
  • Understand, interpret and use lead sheets
  • Understand rhythm and how to develop a strum pattern
  • Understand basic song structure and the uses of the various elements
  • Play basic arrangements of a number of iconic and distinctive songs from popular music.
  • Play your guitar and long to learn more!!!

What to bring:

  • Guitar
  • Pencil or pen and some paper
  • Display folder for class notes.
  • Additional things that may be useful are a guitar strap and tuner but your tutor can advise you in class on these.

Please note: This class also uses an online classroom system which requires a google account to access and there is an online student group on Facebook for any students who are interested.

About the Tutor:

Dave has loved music forever. Playing brass from 1986 for around 15 years he toured the country in a competitive concert band reaching A level competitively. He also studied musical theory at the Conservatory of Music. His journey with guitar began 15 years ago playing kids songs for his church. Since then guitar has taught him a deeper love of music than he had known before and he wishes to pass this love to his students.

Other Information:

  • To ensure resources are ready for you at the start of your course, we ask you ideally enrol at least one week before the course commences.
  • All courses need a minimum number of students to run ("we try our hardest to get those") . If your course does not have enough students it will be cancelled prior to the commencement and you will be informed.

Online Delivery Information

Remote learning for this course is at scheduled class times and sessions. It could include:

  • Livestream video classes online;
  • Interaction with your tutor and other students during livestream video sessions.

Please note: You will need access to the internet and a smartphone, tablet, computer or laptop in order to participate in the livestream video classes.

Face-to-face classes may resume at one of our campuses before the end of the course, depending on discussions between the tutor and students as well as the Government’s recommendations at the time, including appropriate social distancing measures, hand washing and other hygiene protocols.
