Dressmaking & Overlocking

Did you always want to sew your own clothing? Join us at SGSCC for this overlocking and dressmaking class. Get creative and hands-on and learn to use your overlocker to create your very own beautiful clothing. Within that sewing class for beginners you will be shown how your overlocker works. Everything is explained to you step by step and easy to follow, also if you are a total beginner. Our experienced tutor will show you tips and tricks, various hems and sewing techniques. This course is focused on the introduction of the overlocker. So, knowing your overlocker via the diagnostics method and getting to know all the parts of the overlocker and their use is in the centre of attention.

Become confident with your sewing machine within a fun and encouraging. Learn to thread and use flatlocking, rolled and picot stitching on samples. Dressmaking will be incorporated into this course, including pattern reading,

garment construction and sewing techniques using various types of fabric such as stretch and woven fabrics.

Please note: Overlocking students must BYO overlocker.

Course Outline:

This class is split up in 2 parts:

  • You’ll be working 4 weeks on samples so as you get to know how to best use your overlocker
  • Then you’ll use your learned techniques in practices to create your very own garment

Learning Outcomes:

General information:

  • Cleaning, needles, threads and the maintenance of your overlocker
  • Tension adjustments
  • Stitch length, differential feed, knives and tools used on the overlocker

Method application:

  • Overedging, flatlocking, gathering, roll hem, narrow hem, elastic and lace application.
  • Various hemming techniques, rouleau straps, picot hem, lettuce leaf edge, blind hem, flat joining (patchwork) pintucks.

What to bring:

  • Overlocking:

Please bring your own overlocker and a plastic sleeved A4 folder with paper.

  • Dressmaking:

Please bring fabric, simple pattern (skirt or pants), thread, sewing needles, machine needles, tape measure, roll of greaseproof paper, pins, pencil, ruler, scissors and sticky tape.

About the Tutor:

I am passionate about fashion which includes designing, pattern making, the use of the overlocker techniques and dressmaking. I have been teaching for forty years and find my students are always enthusiastic about learning new skills.
Having completed my Fashion Certificate in honours grade I went to become a TAFE teacher of fashion after which I have been at SGSCC for 25 years. For a period of time I also enjoyed in specialising in bridal and evening clothes for individual people. Some of my creations have appeared in Studio Brides and Wedding Sydney Magazine.
