Drawing - Beginners

Discover the joy of how to see and draw in proportion, using simple perspective, contemplating composition and working from small images to larger, completed drawings. Students have the opportunity to also work from life from Still life and prepared compositions within the classroom. To be competent drawer students will need to be convincing in their rendering of tone, and perspective have a realisation of space and where objects sit in space and correctly indicate the use of texture. When finding the fundamentals in drawing thee will be a wealth of drawing goals ahead of you. As you follow exciting themes each week you will gain an understanding of a variety of drawing medium, drawing techniques while having fun and gaining confidence.

Week 1: Drawing Techniques
Week 2: Drawing from the Visible World
Week 3: Basic Perspective
Week 4: Combination of Techniques/Colour
Week 5: Foreshortening
Week 6: Texture and Guesture
Week 7: Practical Drawing Project
Week 8: Practical Drawing Project

Learning Outcomes:

  • The student will be able to successfully select and draw with a black and white drawing media and surface for a purpose.
  • Apply the drawing technique of tone for a selected purpose.
  • Apply the technique of tone to transform shape to form.
  • Understand the concepts of perspective and composition
  • Select and safely use appropriate and various media and techniques for the purpose.

  • 2B, 4B pencils
  • A4 and A2 sketchpad
  • A4 Watercolour paper book/pad – student quality
  • Stencil knife (for sharpening pencils)
  • Compressed and willow charcoal
  • Paper stump
  • Kneadable rubber
  • Hard rubber
  • Watercolour pencils
  • Black ink
  • A4 Watercolour paper book/pad – student quality
  • Bamboo brush.

Holding a BA in Fine Arts and with a career spanning over 20 years Sonja has been a finalist in numerous art awards and has won awards in painting and drawing. She has exhibited in solo and group shows, Artist in Residency programs, community cultural development projects, received public commissions and is a well-regarded arts educator with her work represented in private collections in Australia. A devoted arts educator, Sonja works to provide a nurturing environment in her classes in which every student feels safe, creating confidence and therefore extending themselves expressively. Her way of teaching is to facilitate her students' own style and creativity through structured lessons incorporating visual references and demonstrations in different mediums and techniques. Sonja will improve your skills to a level you never thought possible!
