CHC50113 Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care

Become an important part of children’s development and learning. With more and more child care centres opening up to meet the demands of working families, this shortage is likely to continue. This means that there are many employment opportunities for qualified Early Childhood Educators – so get qualified and kick start your career!

Depending on the setting, educators may have responsibility for supervision of volunteers or other staff in a range of child care facilities such as full day care centres, occasional care facilities, crèches and early learning centres as an Early Childhood Educator.

With this course you will learn how to establish a safe and healthy environment, design, implement, coordinate and evaluate a variety of programs and care routines for children, along with a number of other key skills and abilities that will be immediately applicable and relevant to senior roles in active and dynamic child care environments.

This qualification includes:

  • Providing care for babies and young children
  • Developing skills to support children’s play and learning
  • Ensuring the health and safety of children
  • Developing the knowledge to understand legislative requirements

What you need to know about this course:

  • Classes commence at the beginning of week 1 of each school term
  • Students will be accepted into the class throughout the term
  • You will need to plan for approximately 10-12 hours a week at home to complete assessment tasks
  • There are no training sessions during school holidays
  • Private Facebook groups are used to share resources and learning
  • Resources are provided by SGSCC

What resources do you need to study from home?

  • A computer with internet access
  • Email access
  • Facebook account

Course entry requirements

  • Complete an SGSCC English language, literacy and numeracy assessment to determine that the student has sufficient skills to successfully complete the course
  • Access to computer/internet
  • Facebook account for private class communication and access to learning resources (account can be arranged through SGSCC)
  • Note taking materials
  • Attend work placement (arranged by SGSCC) and be workplace assessed (minimum 240 hours)
  • Unique Student Identifier (can be arranged through SGSCC)
  • There are no formal educational requirements for entry into this course
  • Recognition for units may be granted based on previous learning, studies, work and/or life experiences.

Do you need to complete any work-placement hours?

  • Yes, you need to complete 240 hours in an early childhood education centre that caters for children up to 6 years.
  • Before commencing your workplacement you will need a ‘Working with Children’ check and a current National Criminal Record history check. The college can help you apply for this.
  • SGSCC also offers a simulated learning environment.

Will you need to sit for any exams?

  • No. This is a competency-based course
  • Competency based is: Tell us, show us, implement the learning you have received
  • You will be required to competently complete assessment tasks for all 28 units of learning

Assessments are made up by a range of:

  • Case studies
  • Demonstration
  • Observations in the workplace
  • Portfolio of evidence
  • Presentation
  • Questions & answers
  • Research report

To be deemed competent:

  • You will receive clear assessment instructions
  • You must complete all assessments to a satisfactory standard as set by your trainer
  • These are assessed by your trainer
  • Opportunities will be provided for trainers to support students and to resubmit their assessments if required.

  • $5,000 (fee for those who are ineligible for Smart & Skilled)
