Creative Writing Laboratory

The creative writing laboratory is a new eight week course designed to suit both beginners and those who have written before. Using practical exercises to capture the emotional and physical landscape of your writing, you will discover or rediscover your own writing voice, whilst learning more about structure and style. If you wish, there will be opportunities to read your work to the group for feed back.

Agenda:

  • Week 1: Clarify your idea by drafting tagline, logline and synopsis first.
  • Week 2: Strengthen writing via techniques such as active voice.
  • Week 3: Select the best point of view for your writing – from whose perspective are you writing – 1st or 3rd person?
  • Week 4: Maintain realistic dialogue - ‘how art thou?’ or ' g’day mate how ya going'
  • Week 5: Capture the essence of the setting, whether it be treetop or rooftop.
  • Week 6: Convey the feeling of the times, whether historical, contemporary or future.
  • Week 7: The X-Factor of great writing: if you haven’t got it, where do you get it?
  • Week 8: Next steps: Editors, Publishers, Self-publishing. Australian Society of Authors (ASA) /Australian Writer’s Guild (AWG). Writing Retreats. National/International opportunities.

Course Outline:

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  • 1. Gain or regain confidence in writing creatively.
  • 2. Develop a habit of regularly entering competitions/pitching forums/submitting to publishers/producers.
  • 3. Recognise how to best read writing to others and how to provide constructive feed back to others about their writing.
  • 4. Discover or rediscover the ‘pearls’ in your writing and how to best pitch those pearls to publishers/producers.
