Creative Writing - An Introduction

Got an idea for a novel but do not know where to start? This one day workshop gives you the confidence and skill set you need to get on track to writing that first draft. It addresses the basics you need in a fun and meaningful way, so that you can flesh out the idea in your head and get it onto paper. Intro to Creative Writing is the perfect first step for beginners as well as those wishing to hone their writing skills.


This one day course is a condensed version of the three day course which is entitled, ‘Yes, you too can write a novel’. Please watch these two movies prior to attending the course, ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ and ‘Casablanca’.

Writing templates will be provided for the following topics:

  • Identify your genre/audience/style/ending. Who is your audience? What is your writing style – organic or methodical? Why should you write your synopsis first?
  • How to use beat sheets/chapter outlines/index cards to help you write your novel.
  • Why writing your final chapter before the other chapters is important? What is your ending? What are your conflicts? How are they resolved? How can the resolution be improved?
  • Building up the WHO? – do you really know your characters? How to write a character bible. Who is your protagonist? Why are they doing what they’re doing? How can they do it more realistically/dramatically/entertainingly?
  • Building up the WHEN? – do you really know your time i.e. past/present/future e.g. historical/contemporary/future.
  • Building up the WHERE? – do you really know your place i.e. city/country/moon/cave/mountain top.
  • Finding a proof-reader/editor/publisher. How to market yourself and your writing to a publisher.
