Colour and Watercolour Workshop

Improve your colour confidence. Learn colour combinations that create balanced art works. Learn about complementary greys and how they make your paintings look harmonious. All these colour principles and more in this colour workshop. For students of all levels. Includes a hands-on exercise in watercolour paint-making with pure pigments.

Course Outline:

  • Quick colour exercises in creating harmony and/or drama
  • Quick colour exercises in mixing colour and which colour to add first
  • Discussion of the colour spectrum and how it relates to the colour wheel
  • Colour options to avoid using black
  • How to make your own paint

Learning Outcomes:

  • Knowledge of how colour creates mood, drama and harmony
  • Knowledge of why colour relationships are important
  • Knowledge of how a colour wheel can help your paintings come alive
  • Confidence in colour mixing
  • Knowledge of pure colours versus impure colours
  • Knowledge of the ingredients of quality paint/pencils

What to bring:

  • Tubes: Minimum 6 tubes watercolour: Blues (Ultramarine Blue & Cobalt Blue), Red (Permanent Rose & Alizarin crimson) and yellows (Winsor yellow & Aureolin yellow or hansa yellow or cadmium yellow). Optional extras: Burnt sienna, magenta, phthalo blue, lemon yellow
  • Paper: Watercolour paper: A4 pad (or A3) – must be quality watercolour paper such as Arches or Saunders Waterford or you will be disappointed with the results. Also bring a cheap pad of watercolour paper for sampling.
  • Brushes: Minimum 4 brushes: 2 medium round brushes with good points, one flat brush (e.g. 1/2 inch), liner brush, medium hake brush
  • Extras: HB or 2B pencil, eraser, masking tape, watercolour palette, spray bottle, old towel for the table, tissues, 2 water containers 2 or 3 non-absorbent support boards larger than your paper
