Colour Confidence in Water Media/Pencils/Markers

Join us at SGSCC for this creative one-day art workshop suitable for all student levels! Be creative and use mixed media no matter whether you prefer water colour or other methods to create paintings and drawings and make your art works balanced and unique.

Improve your colour confidence. Learn about colour combinations that create balanced art works. Learn about complementary greys and how they make your paintings look harmonious. All these principles and more in this one-day art workshop. Bring along your preferred water media: watercolour, gouache, pens, acrylic, watercolour pencils, or work in pencils or markers. Includes a hands-on exercise in paint-making with pure pigments and a range of binders.

Course Outline:

  • Quick exercises in creating harmony
  • Quick exercises in creating drama
  • Quick exercises in mixing colour and which colour to add first
  • Discussion of the colour spectrum and how it relates to the colour wheel
  • Colour options to avoid using black
  • How to make your own paint

Learning Outcomes:

  • Knowledge of how colour creates mood, drama and harmony
  • Knowledge of why colour relationships are important
  • Knowledge of how a colour wheel can help your paintings come alive
  • Confidence in mixing different shades
  • Knowledge of pure versus impure colours
  • Knowledge of the ingredients of quality paint/pencils

What to bring:

  • Bring the following shades in your chosen media: warm & cool blue, warm & cool red, warm & cool yellow. Optional extras include Cadmium red, Turquoise and Magenta
  • Paper: bring a few sheets of watercolour paper. Marion uses 300 gsm Saunders Waterford rough watercolour sheets.
  • Bring brushes appropriate for your water media
  • Boards larger than your paper, HB pencil, eraser
  • Painters also need masking tape, palette, 2 water containers
