This course reflects the role of community service workers who design and deliver person-centred services to individuals and/or groups. Workers may provide support, advocacy or interventions to individual clients, groups or communities across a range of services. At this level, workers may be autonomous with limited responsibility within established parameters and may be required to supervise and lead other workers in projects or teams. Work may take place in a range of community service, case work or case management contexts.

What you need to know about this course:

• New students are expected to attend a mandatory college orientation before course commencement. Orientation times and dates will be advised after enrolment.
• Classes commence at the beginning of week 1 of each school term
• Students will be accepted into the class throughout the term
• You will need to plan for approximately 5-8 hours a week at home to complete assessment tasks
• There is no training during school holidays
• Private Facebook groups are used to share resources and learning
• Resources are provided by SGSCC
• Student lounge available
• WiFi is available

Course entry requirements:

• You are not required to have a Certificate II or Certificate III level qualification to enter the Certificate IV course
• There are no formal educational requirements for entry into this course
• Recognition for units may be granted based on previous learning, studies, work and/or life experiences
• Current National Police Check (arranged through SGSCC)
• Complete an SGSCC English language, literacy and numeracy assessment to determine that the student has sufficient skills to successfully complete the course
• Access to computer/internet
• Facebook account for private class communication and access to learning resources (assistance creating an account can be arranged through SGSCC)
• Note taking materials
• Attend work placement (arranged by SGSCC) and be workplace assessed (minimum 80 hours)
• Unique Student Identifier (can be arranged through SGSCC)

Do you need to complete any work placement hours?

• Yes, you need to complete 80 hours (15 days) in a community care service facility such as an aged care home, home and community service, or in a community services role.
• You will work as a student (unpaid) during work placement
• SGSCC also offers a simulated learning environment
• Before commencing your work placement you will need a ‘Working with Children’ check and a current National Criminal Record history check. The college can help you apply for this.

Will you need to sit for any exams?

• No. This is a competency based course
• Tell us, then show us you understand and are able to implement the learning you have received
• You will be required to competently complete assessment tasks for all 15 units of learning

To be deemed competent:

• You will receive clear assessment instructions
• You must complete all assessments to a satisfactory standard as set by your trainer
• These are assessed by your trainer
• Opportunities will be provided for trainers to support students and to re-submit their assessments if required

When you have completed and been deemed competent you can:

• Progress with SGSCC to the CHC52015 Diploma of Community Services
