Cake Decorating - Flowerpot & Butterflies

Learn how to turn your cake into a flowerpot and create colourful flowers to “grow”. You’ll also learn techniques to create beautiful butterflies for your flowerpot. Some materials may need to be purchased additional to course costs.

What to bring:

Cake decorating items available from Cake Decorating Solutions, Caringbah or otherwise online.

  • 2 × 5" cakes, each approx 3" tall (preferably not sponge)
  • 4 cupcakes
  • 11" silver covered masonite cake board
  • 1 quantity of butter cream
  • Spatula or long knife for applying buttercream
  • Food colouring (paste is better for deeper colour, liquid also OK)

- Brown flowerpot
- 2 colours for flowers and butterflies
- Green for leaves and grass

  • White fondant – suggest Bakels (or similar) - 1kg
  • Small bottle of CMC/Tylose – to mix with fondant to make modelling paste
  • Small paintbrush
  • 8 thin wooden skewers approx 15cm long
  • 1 egg white
  • 500g pure icing sugar
  • Dessert bowl to mix royal icing
  • Butter knife for mixing royal icing
  • Tea towel and sponge for clean up
  • 1m of Glad bake (for making icing bags)
  • 3 squares of paper towel
  • Rolling pin
  • Small chopping board for piping butterflies
  • 30cm ruler
  • Small sharp knife for cutting
