Black & White photography is one of the most powerful forms of photography, learn how to see and photograph in Black & White including; the ‘moment’, lighting – high key & low key lighting, contrast, colour and texture for black and white photography, advanced camera set up, lens filters and picture style(s). Learn how to master Black and White Photography from a Professional Photography Tutor in a relaxed but informative atmosphere in one of the most picturesque cityscapes in the world.

Course Agenda:

  • You will learn Black and White photography theory and practice
  • Advanced camera set up, camera style and picture settings
  • How to see and photograph, in black and white
  • Be ready for and capture the 'moment'
  • Interpreting Light for Black and White photography
  • High key and Low key lighting, for black and white
  • High and low contrast colours and subjects, for black and white
  • How to correctly use graduated and solid Neutral density and filters and polarizing filters for black & white photography
  • Debrief in a local cafe; assessment of student photos with a question and answer session about photography theory and or equipment

Skill Level:

  • This course is suitable for students who have a thorough working knowledge of their camera and camera controls, shutter speeds and aperture settings and or have completed a Photography for Beginners Course and or Photography – Intermediate Course and or Beginners DSLR Photography Course and or DSLR or Mirrorless Beginners Photography Course and or similar course.

Essential Materials:

  • Any adjustable digital DSLR, MIRRORLESS, 4/3rds, with RAW / JPEG image capability, adjustable ISO / film speed settings and adjustable exposure settings; shutter, aperture and manual exposure ie S or TV, A or AV and M
  • Wide to telephoto lens(es) / zoom(s) and or len(es) with a fast aperture of f1.4 / f2.0 / f4.0 etc
  • An extra battery and flash card, as you will be your using your camera, and reviewing your photographs frequently
  • A set of slip in graduated neutral density filters and/or screw in solid neutral density filter(s) 3, 6 or 10 stop and or a circular polarizing filter if you have them.
  • A travel tripod or mini table top tripod , baseplate and connected cable release is recommended

Additional items:

  • Weatherproof clothing – warm clothing/jumper, mini umbrella or light rain jacket, etc (this field trip will run in wet weather).
  • Closed in footwear – walking/running shoes etc with rubber soles.
  • Own food, snacks and water (drinks and food are not included)
  • Note pad and pen
  • Money for coffee / snacks / lunch / brunch

Meeting point:

We will meet at the entrance of St James Railway Station Elizabeth Street, opp David Jones, Sydney CBD. The Tutor will be holding a red covered tablet pad.

"My name is Neoklis Bloukos and I have had a passion for photography since I was 14 years old. With 44 years of experience with camera equipment, 25 years as a Press Photographer and 14 years of digital post processing, I am now a professional Photography Tutor, teaching beginners, intermediate and advanced photography at SGSCC.

I am passionate about photography and love to teach and share both classic and modern photography techniques, and believe it is the most significant visual medium on this planet."
