Photography Course is tailored for those seeking to learn both technical and creative techniques of Photography and who wish to seek a greater understanding of the traditional, artistic and core principles of Photography. You will be able to build on and increase your technique and skillset, and take your Photography beyond what you can see, through the technique of previsualization – the true cornerstone of Creative Photography.
This comprehensive 8 x week Course includes 10 x hours of learning Photography in the field; 1 × 2hr – night Jannali shopping centre – night, 1 × 2hr – night Cronulla, 1 × 2 hour – night – Circular Quay / Opera House, 1 × 2 hour – night – Sydney Harbour Bridge / Harbour Bridge / Luna Park Sydney precinct (\*not Luna Park itself) Friday night 7 to 9pm , 1 × 2 hrs – day Camellia Gardens.
As well as comprehensive feedback and theory sessions of 6 x hours (3 × 2 hrs) including your final 2 x hr Post Processing Class, all held using Zoom in the comfort of your own home. This Course precedes the Masterclass Photography Course, which is offered every term, through the College.
Course Outline in detail:
WEEK 1
2 hrs Jannali Shops Picture Styles Colour and Black and White, POV, Lens focal length theory, MAGNIFICATION and Composition
Week 2
2 hrs Cronulla handheld – action/shutter speeds and advanced flash
Week 3
2 hrs ZOOM feedback and theory
Week 4 2 hrs Circular quay and Opera House precinct – handheld and Night Photography and Telling a Story through Photography
Week 5 2 hrs Sydney Harbour Bridge and Luna Park precinct handheld and Night Time exposures and effects
Week 6
2 hrs ZOOM feedback and theory
Week 7 2 hrs Camellia Gardens, – Macro and Close UP and Landscape Photography introduction
Week 8 2 hrs ZOOM Feedback and theory RAW JPEG post-process and workflow to TIFF
If you wish not to do the zoom class feedback / theory (depending on the course), this course still offers great value to learn and experience Photography in the Field, the best way to really learn Photography. Zoom classes are not mandatory but enables the Tutor to give more accurate feeback, in the comfort of your home and also allow a better opportunity for; audio visual Tutoring of Photography: knowledge, and theory and experience from the Tutor and other resources hand picked the Tutor. Most courses and field trips are now maximum of 6 x places offering only the best possible Tutoring and field trip experience(s), and feedback.
Field trips:
Please note;
General photography is permitted, but; (close up photos of families/adults and especially identifying children under 18 years old, should not be taken or be published, unless a model waiver has been signed) Details for the field trips will be sent once this course has begun. If a venue for a field trip(s) has not been granted access i.e. lockdown/safety concerns etc, the weather is too severe etc; an alternative field trip(s) will be offered during the course.
Coffee/drinks/food/dinner/snacks/etc, transport to and from, and any other expenses are not included in the cost of this course
Weather:
All field trips will run regardless of the weather, to give participants an opportunity to photograph in fine or wet weather. A field trip will only be postponed to a future date if heavy weather / thunderstorm is forecast or it is continuously raining. Please note; Coffee/drinks / food/dinner / snacks /etc, transport to and from and any other expenses are not included in the cost of this course
What you will need for Photography field trips;
What to bring: Camera Equipment; Any adjustable digital camera; DSLR / 4/3rds / Mirrorless with;
RAW / JPEG image capability
adjustable ISO/film speed settings
with adjustable exposure settings; shutter, aperture, and manual exposure i.e. S or TV, A or AV, and M,
with manual/autofocus capability
also if your camera has adjustable picture control/picture style settings i.e. monochrome standard, neutral, etc
A spare camera body if you have one
Batterie(s) charged and ready x 2 if you have them
Memory card(s) at least x 2 if you have them
An extra battery and memory card, are strongly recommended, as your camera will be ON, for most of the field trips, and also reviewing your photographs frequently LENS/LENSES You need either; At least one Zoom lens(es) with manual focus capability 18 – 55 mm , 18 – 135 mm , 16 – 35mm , 28 to 80 mm, 10 – 20mm , 40 – 150mm , 70 – 200 etc and or Prime lens(es) if you have them i.e. 35 mm, 50 mm, 85mm, 105mm, 135mm, 200mm
or the Luna Park Field trip in addition to the above
Tripod gear:
A sturdy tripod
Tripod plate and spare plate if you have one – essential for the connection of your camera to your tripod
Tripod head/tripod ball head
A connected electronic cable/cable release is strongly recommended for your camera, as timing is crucial
If it is a remote button release (you should use the same camera brand that is specific to your camera, this is fine if you have one, they are great as a backup remote)
The Tutor will bring 3 x spare tripods for this field trip, if you do not have a tripod, please notify the Tutor at the beginning of this course.
Please note an electronically connected cable release (is essential as timing is crucial), Releasing with the delayed timer on your camera or using a wireless trigger or app with a smartphone is not recommended
Safety Note; Trpods can only be used, with the Tutor’s supervision, and away from public thoroughfares
Lens(es): Zoom lens(es) 18 – 55 mm , 18 – 135 mm , 16 – 35mm , 28 to 80 mm , 10 – 20mm , 40 – 150mm , 70 – 200 etc and or Prime lens(es) if you have them i.e. fisheye , 15mm , 20 mm , 35 mm , 50 mm , 85mm / 135mm Lens notes;
any lens with a fast aperture of f1.4 / f1.8 / f2.0 / f2.8 / f4.0 etc will be very useful night time photography
to do some effects photography a lens with manual focus (usually a switch on the lens or camera) is necessary
to do zoom effects, a zoom lens is necessary
Some night photography is done at close quarters + so make sure you also bring your widest zoom lens and or widest wide-angle prime lens or + fisheye lens.
I use a 15mm fisheye to capture photographs at a closer range
Additional photographic gear, if you have any of items, please bring them along too;
A camera flash (and batteries)
Any Macro kit; close up filter(s) / extension tubes and or macro lens
warmer weather comfortable clothing, hat and sunglasses
mini umbrella only
No large umbrellas for safety reasons
Footwear:
Closed in footwear for your safety, as we will be doing some practical lessons outside the classroom as well as for field trips acceptable; closed walking / running shoes/hiking boots with rubber soles (no thongs/sandals / high heels etc)
Additional items:
A torch – LED and or cob-lamp / headlamp is essential to adjust set up your camera in the dark (\* a smartphone is not recommended)

What you will need for Zoom classes:
Computer / Smartphone / Tablet loaded with an updated version of a browser, either Firefox / Chrome / Safari and zoom software with a basic/free account set up Have zoom software installed and free/basic account set up, this only takes a few minutes.
The Tutor will broadcast in HD please use the fastest connection possible whether; broadband / 5G / 4G etc
Zoom Links, free legitimate camera manufacturer and other software links, course Outline and course notes will be provided by the Tutor, once the course has started.
