Learn how to take great photos and join us at SGSCC for this photography course for beginners! Learn how to get the most out of your camera in this beginner’s class by using its auto settings. This is an intensive course delivered over 1 full day focusing on Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) Cameras with interchangeable lenses. It covers every aspect of photography, from wide-angle to telephoto and macro. We look at composition in-depth, exploring how to visualise the final photo before pressing the shutter button. You then go on location to compose and shoot your images for class discussion.

Be able to use different lenses and other attachments for specific outcomes
Understand and apply the depth of field
Understand colour temperatures and white balance and apply appropriate settings
Apply principles of composition, including Rule of Thirds

Mastering Camera Setting:
Choosing the right shooting mode
File format, size, and quality
White balance and metering modes
Drive mode – single shot v. multiple shots

Exposure compensation, bracketing, and HDR (high dynamic range)
Aperture and Shutter Speed:

What is light? Colour temperature and intensity and how to control it
Front light – taking well-lit and colourful pictures

Artificial light – tungsten and flash (both on and off-camera). Synching more than one flash
Composition:
Principles of composition – rule of thirds

About the Tutor:
'Nic van Oudtshoorn is a multi-award-winning photographer, including the 2024 Abstract Photographer of the Year in the professional category of the prestigious international ReFocus World Photo Annual competition. Photographers from over 60 countries took part. He also won a “Highly Commended” award in the professional wildlife section of the same competition.
Nic has been a photojournalist and documentary film maker for more than 40 years, specialising in close-up and macro, as well as black-and-white and wildlife photography.
Nic’s photos have appeared in books, calendars, newspapers and magazines (including Time and Reader’s Digest) around the world. His photographic excellence has earned him the distinction of Associate of the Royal Photographic Society of Great Britain, the oldest and one of the most prestigious such organisations in the world.
His footage has been seen on TV around the world, including National Geographic and Discovery channels. He has won numerous international awards for his photographs, both colour and black-and-white.
Nic is a qualified instructor with a Master’s degree from Sydney University and enjoys training photographers at local colleges and online. He is the author of 14 books, including The Photographer’s Guide to Close-up, Macro and Focus Stacking, available from Amazon as a paperback, as well as a Kindle edition.'

To ensure resources are ready for you at the start of your course, we ask you ideally enrol at least one week before the course commences.
All courses need a minimum number of students to run ("we try our hardest to get those") . If your course does not have enough students it will be cancelled before the commencement and you will be informed.

West side of Jannali, closest cross street is Louise Street. There is free onsite parking available and ample on road parking (not metered) if the car park is full.
Public Transport
From Jannali Station walk to the West side along Jannali railway (heading towards Sutherland), the fourth street on the right is Louise Street. Jannali Centre is at the end of Louise Street

Accessible toilet and ground floor wheelchair access available Monday – Friday 9:00am-5:00pm, see Reception for directions to room. After hours and weekends look for the Site Co-ordinator for room directions. Onsite Cafe open Monday to Friday 8:00am-3:00pm, Sat 8:30am – 1:30pm. Outside these hours there are drink/snack vending machines onsite.
